Old VW Beetles used the spare tire to pressurize the windshield washer. If it quit working you needed to put air in the tire as it was at only 20psi.
Of course, that was back when air was free at your local gas station.

I worked on jetting my A65 with VMs forever. Put Mk2s on my Bonneville and forgot about them, only changed the idle jets and forgot about problems.

BTW I found a use for the electric start button on my Trident, I wired it to the horns. Now I have button for horns on either hand.

So... is the horn twice as loud if you press both at once, brother? laughing

Yup, that'd be almost as unbelievable as charging more for 2-stroke oil than for decent bourbon....

I'll let you know, they both feed the same relay. But with two Fiamm horns it's as loud as my K100. laugh

Re Tony's bike work. Kevin, you hit the nail on the head. Tony said he enjoyed building the bikes more than riding them. He Said he never rode more than 100 miles at a time. Some of his longest rides were with me in the Finger Lakes of New York.

Now the generation gap- I had a '62 American Motors Rambler. Had vacuum operated windshield wipers. The wipers would speed up and slow down depending on how fast the motor turned. Also had the windshield washer in a bag and had a push button transmission on the dashboard. I own Tony's Ducati. He got the carburetion perfect!

I had a '67 AMC Rebel that had the same vacuum operated wipers - AMC stuck with those primitive things until the end.

They didn't actually operate on how fast the motor turned - they were powered by the manifold vacuum. When vacuum was high (when the engine was idling or cruising or decelerating) the wipers would go like mad. When you pressed the accelerator, however, the wipers would come almost to a stop, and that's when they were working properly.

So when you were following a truck in the rain, with the wipers running at normal speed, and saw an opportunity to pass, and mashed the pedal to pull out into the truck's spray and roostertail, the wipers would STOP, and you were blind as a bat until you backed off. Can't believe they stayed with it.

Don’t know about amc but ford had a combination fuel and vacuum pump to stop that problem with the wipers.

had 63 comet same deal. one could adjust the nozzles to squirt sideways.
people back then didn't know about washers. i would drive thru the strip mall and nail a couple of folks.
water only.
that set up worked great! just stomp! LMFAO!
always worked too.

I smile when I think back about driving in the rain with the old vacuum wipers. Going uphill they would stop moving then almost fly off the wiper arms as you rolled downhill. Same thing when you accelerated from a stop and then backed off the accelerator to change gears. You had to understand and interact with all the mechanical components of your car. I'm sure that's part of the appeal of our old Brit bikes.
