66 spitfire Mk2 - from the factory, is the headlight mounting brackets supposed to be painted black or chrome? the majority of pics show chrome, but a few are black. looking at a spitfire, and they are black (along with the whole bike being repainted black)

Dozens of photos of many Spits on Google,
show them to have CHROME headlight mounts.

Look it up and see for yourself.

Ok, so the whole bike is painted black, and you're concerned about the originality of the headlight shrouds?

Black is a colour option always available for any BSA post WW I
Mostly because Mr Plod preffered a black motorcycle ( so they could hide in the shadows ) .
SO it may have been originally black, only a check of the despatch record will put that to bed.

For what it is worth, I have sales brochures for all spitfire years, and they show black for 66, and chrome for 67 and 68.

SHROME DEFINITLY CHROME, CROME , CHROME. IF YOU ARE STILL NOT SURE, THEY WERE CHROME.

I don't think Joe questioned any of the responses.....

SORRY - didn't realize a simple question would upset some folks. not concerned about anything, and yes the whole bike was painted black - I was just asking what I thought was a simple question. yes, I googled "BSA spitfire" images, and saw most were chrome, but a few in black -- that what triggered my question. I guess I've got my answer, so again, sorry for the dumb question -- you folks can move on now. I know i'm moving on.....

No such thing as a dumb question. You did the right thing by asking, better to be sure than pay to have parts chromed or painted and find you don’t have it correct. Coincidently my Lightning should have black headlight brackets, it came to me with chrome.

Folk have the option not to read or post if they feel a thread is getting beyond their excitement.

SORRY NOT TRYING TO SEEM HARSH. JUST WANTED YOU TO KNOW THAT YOU HAD THE CORRECT ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION..

Th e problem with all of these types of questions is BSA made more than one varaiton of just about every model.
Some people just can not accept that while they saw the bikes new in the showrooms with one finish, in a different county they bikes could and regularly were different .
Some years there was a
Home market model sold in UK & Ireland
A USA model Canada to Mexico
An east coast model Canada & USA East Coast
A West coast model ( mostly California )
A General Export ( Europe )
An Australian & NZ model
Basically they would all be the same except for one or more items like the seat, handle bars, colour, petrol tank, mudguards & finish of minor items like brake pedals could be different.

Because Roy Bacon rehashed the UK BSA literature posted to his office into a book all of a sudden it became criminal to have any bike that differed from the UK specification.

Down here in OZ I can clearly remember walking into the BSA dealers in Wentworth Ave and seeing multiple varaitons of the same model because by the late 60's early 70's we would get Australian deliverd bikes & USA delivered bikes that missed the selling season.
Ane we would get both the general export version & the home version if there were leftovers from that years production run.

ALL TRUE; SOME VARIATION DID OCCUR BUT IF YOU ARE WORKING WITH A BITSA OR A PILE OF PARTS YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO RECREATE A BIKE THAT FOLLOWS "TYPICAL" FACTORY PRODUCTION. SO WHY NOT DO IT?
