Seems as if all the later badges I've had, not the mouth-organ type, have been painted with a white background.
Is that original or did they come unpainted from the factory?

Sorry to disagree but the way work was described in the West Midlands at the time was that "flat rate" involved people being paid a "flat rate" irrespective of how many widgets were produced.
The alternative (more widely used) way was "piece work" where you got paid so much for every widget or "piece" you produced.
Believe me-- I was there at the time~!
