I have a 1961 G80CS with a solid black painted fuel tank. Is that correct for that year/model? I have seen an original 1961 G80TCS and it had pinstriping on the tank. Should the CS also have pinstriping?

Thanks,

Lew

When you google this subject, there are quite a variety of varying images !
I think its fair to say most of em have pinstripes.

This one looks like a factory brochure pic.

I'll pull out the Roy Bacon history books shortly, and have a look.
Roy is Rarely Rong (w) !

P.S. Even brochures are known to show stuff that wasn't made like that though.
Which is tough when you are chasing rainbows in search of that elusive 100%

Thanks. You are so right! Googling pulls up so many different images. My bike has the screw on Matchless badges and not the painted “Flying M” on the tank. It also has 19” wheels front and rear, a muffler, 6v battery and lights. So it was the “road” version. The original tank color appears to have been black. But I can’t tell whether it had pinstriping or not.

AMC advised “Hades Red” as an optional paint colour for the American market 1961 G80CS and the repro 1961 US sales brochure shows it as Hades Red with a broad outer white pinstripe and much thinner inner pinstripe that’s some indeterminate colour. Possibly white or maybe a dull yellowish colour, it’s not a brilliant repro.

The '61 G.80CS with it's big, cylindrical air cleaner is a beautiful "mean-looking" bike !
I always wanted one, but I am now too late in life to restore one, or probably be able to ride it.
