I love this bike and would like to go see it, but I'm thoroughly convinced it is well beyond my means and I have no way to judge its authenticity.

Or the authenticity of the advert.

That same bike, same ad, same photos, failed to meet reserve at $31,000 on Bring A Trailer last week.

Could be real, could be a CL scam.

True, I didn't spend much time thinking about it being a scam. It's only about an hour away from me (allegedly) and real or not, well beyond my means.

If it was an hour from me, I'd go look at it. How many times you get a chance to see one?

Judging by the details in the ad, I'd be inclined to believe it is genuine. It's possible, but I doubt that the typical CL scammer is aware of the VMCC and the breakdown of registered models of the various makes of machines.

You could be right. ON the other hand, could be that the scammer's a step ahead of you. If they weren't convincing, their scams wouldn't work.

However, I don't insist on it. I just naturally don't trust CL; and when something comes off of a trustworthy, pretty much scam-free site like BAT where it didn't sell, and shows up on CL with the lawnmowers and "will trade for boat" ads, I get suspicious.

It's not noted in the CL ad, but on the full-disclosure BAT listing, the bike is listed as a non-runner. That tends to depress the price a bit.

This bike was on Mecum a few years ago.
Some indication of price ?
(Its 'only' a 500cc, so won't be stratospheric)

https://www.mecum.com/lots/LV0119-362422/1932-james-model-d1-v-twin/

Authenticity ?
There is one pictured in the NMM (Brum).
It doesn't have blue wheels, and has a more std looking chrome exhaust ...
Hopethishelps.

No doubt, most people ripped off in these scams were had with a lot less info and the shadiest of ads, and yet, they still fell for it. Much like lonely women falling for men claiming to be Veterans in need, war heroes or both mad

BAT sez at 31K reserve was not met. Mecum shows it sold there for 40K+, so not surprising...

No, it was a "reserve" auction on BAT and didn't meet reserve. $40,000 on Mecum, then stopped at $31,000 on BAT, and now on CL?

Hope the seller isn't as eager to get his money back as it sounds. CL isn't the place for these.

CAPTCHA SUCKS, and doesn't work properly much of the time.

"Check the pictures of a house."
If one of those pictures is of a room INSIDE a house, it says you are WRONG.
