I understand that paint codes for most older BSA bikes are not available . I found a source on line that equates some modern day paints which are a very good match . They have one for a 1966 Lightning and I was wondering ifanyone knows if that is the same red color that they painted on the Sptfires for that year?

It’s my understanding the Lighting was painted Flamboyant Red which is candy apple red. The Spitefire is a solid Red.

The '66 model in UK with the 4 gal tank was named Peony Red, a tinge of maroon in it compared with the brighter red for the '68 model.

Jaguar Signal Red is a fair match for the splatfire's colour.

Original glass tank wouldn't have been painted, would it?

Colour would be in the gel coat which in the UK in 60,s would be a range of British Standard colours. If the Jag colour s a match that suggests BS Signal Red.

Yes, it was in the gel coat. I had a '66 Mk11 in 1967.

Unless you have a monitor that is calibrated to produce true colours, posting links to color images is pointless
And considering the cost & time taken by all of my graphic atrists & trade houses to keep their very very very very expensive monitors calibrated nothing on a home PC or even worse a phone will bear much of a resemblance to what the colour looks like on a fuel tank
And that is before you account for additive colour on a monitor & subtractive colour in pigments .

I would not say it was pointless, I think members are aware that the colours are but a guide. There are even different types of "white", and when we used to set the grey-scale on CRT colour tvs a fluorescent tube was used as a reference for the adjustments, I think it was called 'Northern Grey Sky' shade of white. However, I do think that the depictions given will (at least) help to distinguish between light,medium and dark red.

I BOUGHT MY 66 SPITFIRE PAINT FROM DON HUTCHINSON AND IT WASN'T EVAN CLOSE. IT WAS CLOSER TO DARK MAROON THAN IT WAS TO RED.

I COMPARED DON HUCHINSONA PAINT TO ORIGINAL PARTS NOT TO A COMPUTER MONITOR. THEY WERE NOT EVAN CLOSE AT LEAST NOT TO A 66 SPITFIRE.
