I am installing a new billet aluminum operating arm and premier carbs on a friend's 72 T150V. The old operating arm has broken at the point of the cable attachment. The new Premier carbs include the light weight spring 622/277. The billet operating arm has no notching for the original external spring. Putting two and two together, it would appear that I leave out the old small spring and clip inside the throttle slide as well as the large external spring of the operating arm. Is this correct? It would be nice if AMAL/Burlen would include an instruction sheet with each triple set. The only information included was a statement that the spring included was the light weight spring for triples. Zero instruction in the package for the operating arm. Thanks for your replies!

Yes-- you are correct---leave out the external spring. And just have the lighter spring operating the throttle slide. The carb spring set up is then like a twin. Having the springs inside the carbs helps them to return to the same position when you throttle off. With the external spring if you have any play in the gantry arm bushes then the carbs can come down to different positions from operation to operation. I have run my 1972 T150V with this set up for many years with no problems. HTH

Thank you, Tridentman! I seemed to remember you addressing this in a previous posting but I wasn't sure. This new billet aluminum gantry/operating arm is nice in that it operates on two roller bearings. The only bummer is the pivot rod is now too long for the application with the external spring no longer used. I may have to come up with an attractive alternative. Maybe a couple of stainless shoulder bolts will do the job! It should make for a nice upgrade. Thanks again!

Here is what I came up with for an answer to the pivot rod length issue. The rod is .8 inches too long without the external spring. The spacer under the OEM spring is less than attractive. I used a 3/8 inch spacer and a 1/4 inch spacer plus two stainless washers to at least give it a decent appearance. Spacers and washers added $7.00 to the cost of the upgrade but it looks a bit better. I am anxious to feel the action of this set up!

What sort of roller bearing? Needle rollers would be ideal, spread the load better.

Nice piece of kit that cross bar is..
+1 only internal lightweight T160 springs.

Wow that’s looks awesome, my t150 came without the internal springs and I did exactly what you suggested, leave the internal springs in the new premiers and remove the external one, works perfectly.

My Premiers came with internal springs. They were not quite as light as the T160 springs I had bought from British Only when I rebuilt the original carbs. I had already removed the spring from the gantry.

Thanks for all the replies! I thought I would follow up on this project. I have the bike back together and it runs great!
A few more things to sort out before spring and my buddy will have a really nice rider. A few pics of the installation, starting with the broken operating arm.
The chrome screen for the air filter was broken so we replaced the entire unit, I had to install it in pieces and a dab of grease on rubber parts helped!
The OEM spring on the idle stop needed replaced or it would not touch the arm, did a bit of filing to give it a better foothold.
The side covers he found on eBay don't quite match the faded original paint, but he has another original paint tank that isn't as faded, might blend better.

I think I looked those side panels on eBay, but as you say the paint didn't match my original tank. I need to have mine painted to match, I have the correct decals.
