Back in the’70s I had a Norton 400 Electra. It was a good looking little bike that looked like a mini-Atlas. I tried the search feature and came up with 20000 threads with none of them featuring the Electra. Anyone have one of these? I remember it ran well but could barely hit 55 mph.

If you search just on Electra it will find a smattering of results here.
It only looks for the 1st word, very inflexible.
There may be some trick to it, but when you have to do battle with mere searching ...
I had heard that smaller Nortons needed more pep.
Something the Brits seemed very reluctant to research.
Someone who really knew their stuff breathed on an AJS 7R (pure race bike, single cyl ohc)
such that it could keep up with an MV/4.
I reckon they should have hired that guy for their road bike design team ... !!
I have just obtained some (factory) tuning notes for a Healey Sprite.
It warns you that the extra 2 bhp so obtained might mean you need the stronger crankshaft.
Oh boy ...

Mebbe we just need a pic of it. For old times sake. Although leccy start may have complicated that.

No, I’m not looking for one. I took mine to a couple of British bike meets and a lot of the people had never seen one (that actually ran), and this was the’70s…
Mine was in very nice original condition.

i get 343 hits.
when i search on
+crank +electra
i get 20.
searching on
+electra +"for sale"
will only get three
watermelons, and turnips, and a contaminator
and other stuff

If you use
Norton 400 Electra
in the Search box it will return any post with any of the 3 terms in it.
e.g. all posts with Norton as well as all posts with 400 as well as all posts with Electra.
If you use quotes:
"Norton 400 Electra"
it will only return posts with that exact phrase.
Looks like 16 posts total drawn from 4 threads.

putting a plus in front of the term means that the term is required.
putting a minus in front means to exclude all results with that search term.
so searching for
+cylinder -head +BSA
will give you posts with BSA and cylinder, but exclude all the ones that also have head. this is useful when the search results have vast numbers of irrelevant matches

I've not seen a going one, here in Oz.
And been to a few bikeshows and Norton gatherings.
Might have seen one, parked, in the UK but...
Can't recall seeing how many they sold ...

Dealers couldn't give them away, nobody wanted them.
A C15 was 1/2 the price and much faster.

Never seen any of the variants, Jubilee, Electra etc running Buddy of mine in the ‘70’s rebuilt a Jubilee and it couldn’t pull the skin off the proverbial.

The British were capable of building bikes with performance. But the rather conservative thinking at the time put profits before everything ... The budgets for all-new bikes were rather lacking also. Its a BSA MC1, a 250cc dohc radial 4 valve single. https://www.motorcycleclassics.com/classic-british-motorcycles/bsa-mc1-250-racer-zmcz12ndzbea/The Race Dept couldn't GUARANTEE it would win - so it never raced. Would likely have out-Guzzied Guzzi (and all comers) in the world championships... We have diverged somewhat from Electra's here ! If only to demonstrate that the Brits could design performance ...
