Spell check is what everyone blames for gibberish text messages.

Spell check isn't 100 percent reliable.

When it tells me I've spelled a word wrong, I reach for the dictionary I keep near my computer to check "spell check."

I went to school in England in the 60s and 70s. MY spell checker is my own ability to look at words and get them correct..... I am living in Australia now and only yesterday the literacy rate is reported as being (further) reduced. Teachers take note, maybe the old methods are the best, or at least if they are not THEY WORK! News captions are the worst form of bad English, only the other day I learned about the sad death of David Crosby who according to Channel 9 News was a great musician and signer....

Mine works every place else but here. It used to work here. I'm from Pittsburgh, Pa. My mother always said "just spell it like it sounds". Unfortunatly in Pittsburgh we spoke a form of English heard no where else in the world. I'll figure it out.

A "spell check" story:

A friend worked in the sign shop of a city near here. His job was to make street signs, and any "special" signs the city required.
The local library required several for it's parking lot, so he made them, and then put them up where they wanted.

The library's manager called his boss "THE SIGNS ARE MISSPELLED !"

So, he checked the spelling, and they met the computer requirements of the stencil cutting machine he was using.

Digging into the problem deeper, he learned the computer system came from Sweden,
and the Swedes were using BRITISH English spellings, not U.S. spellings.

Rather than argue with the librarians about it, he just made new signs.
But he never trusted that system's "spell check" again.

Right click in the Quick Reply box.
Choose the Spell check option of the menu that should appear .
What are the settings?

Given the average age of people on Britbike, and the spelling errors, punctuation mistakes, run-on sentences, lack of paragraph breaks, etc. that are all-too-common, there is plenty of evidence that old teaching methods didn't work with a lot of people.

What I like don't like about spell check is it's amazing ability to "learn" wrong spellings with a simple touch of the wrong button.

My spell checker works. It even points out words that I left out and suggests grammar corrections. It just worked three times in the last sentence and one time in this one. I don't know what I did but it's fixed. Damn I'm a genius.

My first experience with spell check was when I used to use Word Perfect. It always told me that my last name had only one T in it. I guess in Scotland and New Jersey it does, but my name is still Patterson.
