Have been looking for a few parts on a rebuild of a BB32R. The motor is a 1960/61, which is not the original motor. It has the steel stamped covers and I am going with a BNR belt drive. So, in order to do that it has to have the wider alloy covers. I know currently there are a couple on ebay, (rough) and am aware that the A10 cover will work with some machine work, but not ready to take this step yet unless someone has one already built one they would be willing to part with. Thanks for any guidance, KC

Hi KC,

First congrats on your BB32R,
I believe a vast majority of the survived BB32R's don't have the original motor.
Mine does but it don't have the original frame. It was damaged in 1958 and was replaced by a factory frame one of the last ever made.

a lot of the engines blowed up and I remember Dick Mann saying he had piles of crank cases and some had no numbers so he put his own in there.
The poorer engines was for the less classy races and the best was saved for the big time national races.

If you are building a show bike then buy new alloy chain cases they are made. If so ask around.

ABSAF in Holland

If not new then keep in mind these were race bikes so expect patina.

An A10 has a much larger hole and 5 Fasteners where it bolts to the engine and the three front outer cover bolts go right through to the crankcases. You would need to weld in a plate to reduce down to fit a goldie case. It could be done but finding a proper case would be better.

Nor does it have the cutaway to clear the magneto points cover.

Thank you Morgan for the reply! First off, this is my first experience with a Gold Star, and I'm finding out you have to dig deep to get educated on the BB32R as most racers that experienced them are far and few between these days. Plus there is minimal information as far as being a factory bike. This bike has some pretty good DNA out of Southern California. Communicating with Dennis Mahan, he built the fork top yoke, which is aluminum. As far as plans for the bike, the motor is getting a total rebuild and in a month should be done. Transmisson has been gone through and is currently sitting on a shelf. I am also trying to run down a 19" Dunlop shouldered alloy rear wheel setup, (brakeless). Those I'm finding out are almost unobtainable. Have a Dunlop 19 on the front. I also walk by my Hornet and look at it's 19" front wheel but just can't bring myself to use it. Sorry for making so long, but plans are to race the bike 2 or 3 times a year at some special tracks, Stockton, Ks. and Davenport Iowa. It will not be a show bike as am leaving as much patina as possible and still making it safe and dependable to race. I did upgrade my membership, so hopefully I can figure out how to post pics. My old mind is just good enough to be dangerous with a computer. Thanks again Morgan! Kevin

Stuart, thanks for jumping in! After speaking with Beno Rodi, he is the one who made the suggestion about the a10 conversion. I hold Beno on a pedestal as far as BSA's go and his fabrication skills. I myself fall into neither category as even an amateur. So that is where I got the idea for the conversion. I would rather go with a Gold Star alloy inner primary. Thanks again on your wisdom and advice! Kevin

Cheers Some time ago I had a stepped alloy washer that bolted to the GS cases and then the A7/10 inner bolted to the alloy stepped washer. but you would still have to make the cut out for the mag. I will give a look for it. I also have a alloy outer cover with a cut out for a belt drive clutch. you can have both for the shipping Hunter

Remember seeing a couple of inner primary cover with cutaway 42-7502 on eBay recently - maybe you saw? Think both had or need repair. I will see if I can find again and post links, one was on eBay.uk. They don’t come up very often and are priced accordingly. I bought a nice one a few months ago for a project.
For brand new ABSAF has available as mentioned. Just saw Mikes Classic Spares has 3, look nice, in Aus.

Jan lives a few miles from me… I do approach him regularly for some GS parts… getting te same same answers by default…

Call me back in 6 months, maybe, just maybe if i have a spare, but don’t count on it…

Well that says enough i think ;-)

You can purchase the inner chain case from Phil Pearson Junior.
It is normally sold as pert of an electronic starter kit.
An A7, A10 or B Series outer chaincase will fit.

Thanks Motolab! Have just sent them a message on their website. Hopefully this could be the answer to my prayers. Fingers crossed, KC

Hello Hunter, tried private message but it couldn't go through to you. My email is [email protected], maybe we can converse that way. Would be willing to try going your route and would make your time worthwhile. Thank you! Kevin
