I fitted an Alton starter some years ago ,and have had various problems ,ie rotor stator several times but the most is that it wears out the brushes ,I
have had to replace 3 brush sets in 4 years , and now they are hard to find , Alton has not replied to any emails, has anyone else had this problem?/
the commutator is in good condition

Alton is on Facebook.
Try writing to Paul on Facebook and see what he has to say.

Not a good sign, baz. Paul is usually very good with customer support.
If you like, I will write to him. What exactly would you like from them: just a set of brushes?

Not local to you but I have gotten brushes from carbonbrush.com. They have all sorts of styles and dimensions.

Baz,
I contacted Paul at Alton this morning and explained the situation to him.
Paul will be contacting you directly to sort it out.

How have you determined this ?
With so many problems, has this been machined - or even filed - down ?
Even just as a precaution ...

Rohan there is no undue wear or grooves it has been checked every time that I have replaced the brushes ,
I have had an auto leky look at the commutator and can find no fault with it

baz, I'm confident that Paul will sort it out for you quickly. He has lots of those starters out in the field, and they are not known for brush wear.

Could it be that the previous brushes were the correct dimensions, but made from the wrong grade of material?

GREGG,could be but 3sets worn out in 4 years seems strange ,I dont mind replacing the brushes except I have to remove the whole primary and clutch side
just to get at the start motor ,I am getting quite good at it now hahahaha
