AGM in all my bikes lead/acid is kaput archaic old timey guaranteed to piss on your chrome etc

^^ Yes, AGM always for me.

AGM = Absorbent (or Absorbed) Glass Mat

"Gel" is something else AFAIK. Had to look it up, e.g.,

About 10 years ago I replaced the lead acid battery in my cherry 78 T140v due to it leaking acid and the resulting damage to the chrome on the rear fender. Like Kurt, said above, AGM is my preferred battery so one went in at that time. Last month I noticed a single drop of acid on the floor under the bike. Inspection revealed a cracked battery case. Possibly caused by my religious use of a battery tender. No damage to the fender as 99% of the acid stayed in the AGM battery. Happy days!
PS it was quite a large crack, split the outside cell top to bottom!

Good place to start looking.
Make sure that you get a charger rated as safe for AGM batteries. They are not very forgiving of being overcharged.
