I removed clutch cable to shorten the inner and found that the gearbox-end ferrule (33) was missing and had been replaced with a couple of washers.

Looking at the parts diagram (1968), I notice parts 32, 31 which I can't see on mine, can someone explain?

Lots of blokes omitted those parts when re-assembling after
using different cables.

For the ferrule, I soldered a suitably sized piece of steel tube to a 1/4" washer, then fitted a compression spring just strong enough to keep the slack out of the actuating arm.

The idea with the original setup was you could change the cable without removing the outer timing case. If you have the sprung adaptor, that would poke through the inner timing case, and the abutment piece would slide up the cable before fitting. You would then use the “adaptor” which is a large version of the throttle cable ferule on the twist grip. Then separates the cable outer from the abutment.

Like Nick says though these often get omitted as if you buy a decent heavy duty cable or make a Venhill cable, the adaptor seldom fits and you have some modifying to do. All the bits are available to buy if you wish to use them, but for mine I ended up not bothering, and by having the cable directly on the arm and not on the sprung extender piece it gives me more clutch lift.
