Earlier today, after we got the main canopy up. Bill enjoyed a cigar.

Ed and Brian are in the swap meet area, bill, Jack Adams, David Duke, and I are in the campgrounds.

More to follow

We are in camping space 393.

Go past the building at the entrance of the campground. Take the 2nd road, we are about 3/4 of the way down the road on the right.

Ed Dunham’s swap space is easy to find, he is in the row against the main road thru Mid Ohio, r spaces or so up from the cross road. Small Italian bikes sitting around.

Some pics from yesterday

Well, we'll hear Richrd's story soon, I assume .... I was very confused as to what was going on even though (or maybe because) I actually heard him on the phone for a few minutes.

Got to see most everyone for at least a few minutes, helped Ed, David, and Willy hold down Ed's shelter while a 2-hour storm blew through Saturday about 11:30 AM, talked to a young fella that had just gotten a DBD-34 Gold Star from his father's estate and helped him through the process of getting to know his new project, scanned about 3,000,000 Japanese dirt bikes from the 60s-80s (only about 3 British vendors left), lusted after a perfect '76 RD400C exactly like I used to have and enjoy, but restrained myself, dodged 100,000 pit bikes roaring and screaming up and down the swap meet, and Man with No Name made me an excellent roast beef sandwich and a beer which went down well after hours of roaming the meet. Enjoyed dinner with Willy and Linda Saturday evening.

1181 miles total travel, 11-1/2 hours elapsed coming home today, 9-1/2 hours actual driving; the Subaru got 32.1 MPG over the mountains which made me happy, and home and dry now. We'll do it again next year.....

Short story with pics later. I just felt like a ride, tired of 100+ temps every day, and was thinking of when I used to go to mido. well it aint the same mido no more. but in some ways it is. such as trying to close the campground before people got back from Ashland.

started off with a good breakfast down on the highway, then a couple hundreds miles of good twisties, a stop at Wilson Combat, (I know there's at least one member gthat knows the signifigance of this). and more two lane up into Illions and the big road.

hit ohio and the over heating alarm goes off. iinccluded troubleshooting on the side of the interstate, telling the nice Mr. Smokey that I wasn't wereing all this safty gear to be carefull. Talking to a couple triumph mechanics who had zero interest in helping me. But I could make an appointent and they would get me in on Tuesday. (this was Saturday in Columbus ohio) Making it to the Flat track, (still a good show), and finding that the big groups I remembered now who three.

Talked my way into mido for free, diagnosed the problem wiht help from Rich B, Slept in the backseat of Bill's truck, fixed the radiator with jb weld, and only got caught in 4 down pours on the way home.

Paul ask me if the trip was worth it.

HELL YES

There's an RD400 in an estate auction here on August 20 if you want a second chance. I'll bid on the SR500.

Sorry for taking so long to post these, life has been in the way. Not been a good week….

Had the usual torrential downpour/high winds/lightning/etc. Saturday. Then it cleared up, bike problems caused a switch to the truck for Ashland. Johnnie B got 2 wins and a 5th at Ashland. Track was best I have ever seen it. Surface held up great.

Getting back in the camp ground early Sunday (12:03 AM) was interesting. The campground Storm trooper was letting bikes into the campground, but told me I wasn’t allowed in with the truck, even though I had my tickets and campground pass. He didn’t care that I had been there since Thursday, the campground was closed! I used a some colorful language to explain he was going to be an F150 parking lot if he didn’t get out of my way. He decided that was not a good career choice. I got in.

Then the usual late night campground douche baggery including the free porn show in the golf cart.

No pics from Sunday as I had to hustle to get out of there do to a family medical emergency. Good to hear the patch got Richard home ok.

In retrospect, I think for me, VMD jumped the shark in 2022. My involvement next year may be dramatically different…..

Don’t blame either one of you for holding on so long……you’re both from Ohio.

I said I wouldn’t come back……renegaded on that and made it back for one day.

I paid my penitence by pulling a cart around to EVERY vendor in the swap meet giving away cold beer and water.

Made one pass through the campground but didn’t see anywhere to park so I left without checking in to the compound.

I’ll never forget or forgive the threat of towing my truck and throwing me in jail if I didn’t move my truck out of the RV spot I had paid for. I showed him the receipts for all three RV spots I had and for the $1000 worth of camping passes I purchased. My RV was a ranger…(we had so many attendees that year we needed a space for overflow parking).........but none of that mattered.

Had some really good times there……

I always have to wait until the next year, at least after January 1st, before I make the decision to come back. A week after I get home, I always say "Nah, probably not. It's not what it used to be." Then the next spring, I always send away for my ticket and make my reservations.

Fay's out, though. She can't believe that I attend such a thing. The first time we popped over the last hill on Steam Corners Road and the entire panorama of tents, swap meet shelters, racetrack, and all were laid out before us, she said "This looks exactly like the Quiddich World Cup in Harry Potter! Tents everywhere, people zooming around on brooms dirt bikes, mobs of people ...!" Four years ago, she'd take a turn around the swap meet with me. Last year she helped me set up my table in the vendor area, this year she went as far as 50 feet into Gate 2, whirled the car around, and said "I'll be back around 5 ... !"

So we'll see.

Lannis

Maybe we are. I was pretty disgruntled after the white trash next to us apparently flattened the tires on my Bul several years ago, because they thought I parked too close to their canopy. Never mind they had their canopy on my camping space.

It has changed, and not for the better. Track offers less services, prices go up, it is more of a cluster every year. I may still attend for a day, but the whole weekend is questionable going forward

Nothing like that Rich.........we've both had some really good times there.

The time Mike Carter shared a tent with me. He kept me up most of the night laughing. The story about him and Dave as kids....kneeling on shoes......side by side singing " We welcome you to lollipop land" still kills me. Absolutely not politically correct but it was funny as hell.

Bodger, Tarvin, Craig and Mr Ben........the year of the fire truck.......the memories.

Sad but it started going down IMO after AHRMA left.....not sure that was the main cause. Could be we were just having so much fun I didn't notice decline before that. The head of security for the day standing there telling me I was going to jail if I didn't move my truck off my RV site......was hard to take.

I just heard from some close friends who have attended EVERY event since the first one at the AMA headquarters. The whole thing was out of control this year, and they won't be returning. They are ready to make the drive from Ohio to here then on to Barber instead.

I raced two more years after the AMA and WERA took over. I swore off it from then on. Such a shame, but it had a good run.

If you guys return next year you should try to find like 5 swap meet spaces in a row and set up camp up there. It is almost the same price as camping and weekend pass. I made enough money to cover my tickets and then some by just selling junk that was laying around the garage.
P.S. I know for a fact there was almost a whole row of spaces left two days before the event. Just a thought.

If some smart guy who knows the VMD ropes (and there are several here) wants to find such a series of spots, I'm in to pay for one of them ..... The people camping in the swap meet looked like they were comfortable, although it looks like a bit of a hike down to the shower block. Maybe not, though ...

Didn't I just say I'd wait till next year to decide? Ok, I'll wait till next year to decide.

Some positives about swap meet: my new swap space put me two rows from the shower block. I got in early without buying a racing tix. Don't have to worry if your gonna get a campsite that's right next to barrel racing or burnout idiocy. It was dead quiet up there at night time. The new people I met around me where very friendly and helpful.
I know I would of been miserable down in the campground as I have been in previous years, if we had the whole crew upin the swap it would of been even better. just my two cents...
