Hi All!

Picked up a new addition to collection this weekend, a 1966 A65L that's been in storage since the early 90's. Looks like, at least as of now I will need a new front fender, LH header pipe, Chainguard and rear brake plate as the Chrome is shot. Going for a refurbishment at the moment over a restoration as its pretty much original. If anyone may have some good used items Im in need of above, hit me up.

Thanks

Before I bought new bits, I would either consider re-chroming what is on there (trouble with that is where do you stop) or the following: Try polishing some of those bits with your favorite chrome polish (some folks use WD-40) using a wad of aluminum foil instead of a rag. Rub it hard enough to generate some heat, The foil is softer than the chrome, so it won't scratch. It won't take out pits, or help if the chrome has started to peel, but it can have some pretty remarkable results, and you keep the original bits, It's only original once!

Ed,

I plan on polishing all of the other chrome bits as it comes up really nice, problem is the bike was stored with a plastic cover while leaning on the side stand so the left side pipe, chainguard and front fender are heavily pitted and chrome flaking off. The front rim has some heavy pit marks but I think I can mangae with those, at least for now.

Wow! Very nice find!! BTW, finding a good chromed 6 tab fender would be hard, so +1 on the rechrome even tho it will be expensive, better than any repop.

Wow, I drooled all over those things in 66 but had no $ to buy one. By the time I had some cash it was the Rocket 3.

Made some good progress over the past few days. Got her stripped down, power washed and wiped down. Polished all the black bits (frame, fork lowers, etc.) and cleaned polished the rear fender, HL bucket and handlebars. So far the chrome is turning out great with a high luster. Now on to the controls and exhaust before pulling the engine covers off for a polishing.

Blown Income, if you can't find a good used or NOS front guard, we just took delivery of a few of the 68-6536 6-tab front fenders. Check out the pricing compared to re-chroming.

Thanks, nothing like bringing back original parts to a shiny luster. I'm using a combination of steel wool and liquid chrome polish. I start with some mild cleaner sprayed onto some 0000 steel wool and scrubbed in the length direction of the part to remove any surface rust, oxidation and gunk then once wiped clean I apply hand some liquid Mother's Chrome Polish and buff out with a microfiber rag.

I got the hand controls, HL trim ring, LH exhaust pipe and muffler cleaned and installed. I will say that the Brits knew how to properly chrome there parts.

It’s a shame that isn’t as true today.

Almost ready to fire her up. Got her all back together (minus the front fender) and all fluids changed. Even got the Title changed over with registration in my name. I have new Hagon Shocks, new air filters, refurbished chaingaurd and rider foot rubbers this evening and its time for some fuel and hopefully an easy start up.

I am not as polishing guy. Your 66 looks far better than mine when I sold it a few years back. Once I rebuilt the motor it was a great runner and easy starter. Never had a minute's trouble with it.

Re-chroming is getting very pricey. Check the price of a new one before jumping on a re-chrome. I have pretty much given up on re-chroming unless it’s the part you have is the last one on the face of the earth.
