Does anybody know which would be the correct carb for a 1965 350 bullet. The workshop manual lists it only as an AMAL monoblock carb, I've done a little digging around the Web and I believe it may be a 376/297? Can anybody confirm this?

And also is there any common issue with this carb, and any upgrade of that period that would be a better choice whilst maintaining the period look. I'm not happy with the modern Mikuni rip off that is on the bike at the moment..... it works but, its not " british inkeeping"

376/279 is listed for 1963, '65 is a 376/312. The only difference appears to be the main jet size.

I ended up buying a 376 40 as the bodies are much the same
I've been looking at the AMAL guides and note the mai jet varies from a 160 up to a 220..

As they're all being fitted to a 350cc engine, what is the reason for the major size differences

And what size jet would people recommend. I was going to go with a 160 as that's what is listed but see 180 is more common and the 220 which I'd assume too large from a 160.

The carb I have now has a 250 in but I don't expect it to run on it

Air filter type (if fitted) and muffler type make big differences to the main jet required.

Most of the running around town is done on the idle jet and the needle jet.
So it is way more important initially that these be correctly sized.

P.S. AMAL sold a lot of patents to Mikuni, so its possibly not as un-british as you may think ...

And if what you now bought didn't come set up for your specific model, be prepared to do lots of tuning/experimenting ?

The carb I bought is set up identical aside from the main jet size, which should be a 160, I've ordered a 170 as I'm not putting the airbox back on, I'm gonna go with tye bemouth on it.
It's on the bike now and fires up easier than it did with the mikarb, it idles perfectly and pulls nice although I have only really been lower end of the rev range. I'll take it for a good ride when the new jet arrives and see how it performs

Just to update the thread, stick listing was a 160 main jet for this year, I bought a 170 and left the belmouth in place. Have done a good few miles now with this set up and it runs incredibly well, much stronger than with the micarb, gained a little at top end, easier to start too.
