Prevailing current theory seems to be that (with modern oils) you have to get the rings to bed in in the first few minutes of running or they may never seal properly. Don't let it idle on initial start up and rev it hard for first 20 miles of running. Have followed that regime on last couple of bikes I've recommissioned and seems to have worked (also used 30 wt oil initially).
