My 1975 850 Commando Mk3 has a Veglia speedometer and tachometer. The speedometer failed. This is my first experience with Veglia and the speedometer appears to be very low quality. I purchased a rebuilt Smiths speedometer and tachometer from Vintage British Wiring as replacements. They look better than new. The question I have is how to get the speedometer trip reset knob through the very small hole in the plastic cover on the bottom of the speedometer case. I'm afraid of damaging the long trip reset by forcing it through. Can the long trip reset be easily removed from the speedometer and reinstalled so that the upper end could be passed through the hole in the cover? Can the knob be removed from the end of the long trip reset? I'm afraid of damaging my new speedometer.

I don't know about the Smiths magnetics for the Mk3, but for the Smiths chronometrics
the speedo trip reset thingy has an extension/fitting with a split pin through it.

Removing the split pin would allow its removal. Don't know if later Smiths are like that though ?

You pull the trip reset knob out with what seems too much force but it does come out, but a Commando Smiths speedo would not come with a trip meter (MK3's may be an exception), hence possibly why the Veglia's were to be fitted to Interstates and not Roadsters as Veglia's came with trip meters.

The 850 Mk3 Smiths speedo (should be SSM 4003/06 Correction: /00 1000) does have a trip meter.
