New take on an old favorite from 1929, and again in 1971 ...

Always one of my favorites. Unfortunately it has once again become all too appropriate.

Going back through 10+ years of this thread, if you add up all the votes for "Best" (or "Your Favorite") "Rock Songs of all Time", this one probably takes the #1 slot ... or at a minimum, is no doubt in the top 5 as voted by Britbikers, so we've heard it a thousand times.

But it's more interesting with the backstory. The Stones were in Los Angeles to record some music, and were preparing to do this song. Someone said "It'd be really great to have a woman to sing the backup vocals on this", and one of the studio dudes said "I know JUST the one", and got on the phone at midnight and called Merry Clayton, a 21-year-old gospel singer who lived just down the road. He read off the lyrics on the phone, and she and her husband said "I don't want to be doing no songs about rape and murder." But when they realized the overall context, as a song decrying the evil that humans do to each other as well as the good, she agreed.

She hopped into the car in her pajamas and hair curlers, 4 months pregnant, and was at the studio in 15 minutes under a set of headphones and a mike in front of her.

The rest is her place in history; her background vocals and her ferocious, off-the-chain lead on "...it's just a shot away, it's just a shot away" will live as long as vinyl and bits and bytes last. Ignore Mick and boys ... listen to Merry.

Merry has had a lot of high and low spots since then (she had a miscarriage the day after the recording, and lost her legs in a car crash 8 years ago) but she's still performing and still an amazing and upbeat personality.

Serves them right for using Hell's Angels as concert security.

SO much great music lately! I usually search or screen shot cool stuff to revisit later on... here's an eclectic blend of some stuff I've heard lately.

this Kevin Morby tune is a standout! I love the way he builds this sweet tune.

another standout tune from a band called The Smile, the song is The Smoke- shot on 16mm film! This is a Radiohead spin-off project featuring Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood and Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner.

a cool R&B flavored number from Omar's hat, on Our Way

here's a standout cover of Arthur Brown's Fire by Lizzy Mercier Descloux- a throwback throwback from 2015! Man, the stuff I hear on the radio! This is a bit dated- but lively.

another cool cover, the great Jerry Garcia & Merle Saunders covering Stive Wonder's I Was Made to Love Her. Kinda jammy, but hey- it's Jerry.

OK back to the more immediate... heard an interview with these EDM guys recently, they're killing it these days.
Rufus Du Sol, On My Knees

I'll leave you today with this sweet little tune by The Side Chicks - Foreign Creatures. Quirky, poppy & boppy, this one turned my head around. Don't hear music like this every day, especially on the RADIO.... Lots of layers in here with really great instrumentation and a fun bass hook. Took me a couple runs back thru my screenshot archives from recent weeks and months to find this. I love this tune!

Sorry, no links. I was in a thrift store today. Some old hippie must've died and left his CD collection to them.
I got Low Spark of High Healed Boys, Harvest, Electric Warrior, Ten Years After, and I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die for $1 each.
They also had the first Captain Beyond and some Zappa, but I already have them.

Heard this forgotten band on the radio a couple days ago.
Badger was a band featuring Tony Kaye, after he left Yes. This tune, White Lady, has Jeff Beck on Guitar.
Nice little Blast From The Past here. Let the videos roll after this tune and catch more Badger, if you feel it.

I blame you for getting me started a few years ago on these guys here.

In their 20's, they were rocking the 70's, and in their 70's they were rocking the 20's .....

Unlike a few other bands who have performed through 6 different decades, these guys never lost their mojo and energy.

This one's the closest thing they've ever come to a quiet ballad ...
