people, there are words of wisdom that occasionally crop up in this place, when people say something useful, or profound, or funny, or revealing of something in some way.

post such tidbits here in this thread. no telling what we might learn from what somebody here has said./

Whether or not I should have thought of reading as a race, or I could have overcome his two-year head start in the many decades that followed, isn't the point. Which leads to this unsolicited advice: if there's something you want to do, start doing it now, because it's irrelevant whether or not you "should" have started years ago.

^^^this is absolutely true.

This is a piece of advice that was posted here that I am paraphrasing.

If a task seems overwhelming, work at it for two hours regardless of the outcome. I am constantly amazed by how much one can get done and mentally how much better you feel about it.

" Which leads to this unsolicited advice: if there's something you want to do, start doing it now, because it's irrelevant whether or not you "should" have started years ago.""

I started road racing when I was 55 years old. I have several plaques and certificates from the next 10 years (but not many of them are "1st place").

I took up land speed racing when I was 62. Building my own custom "A" class bike forced me to learn how to properly bend tubing and TIG weld the frame. I now have 5 national (Bonneville) records and several more from Loring.

In 2016, I bought a used obsolete chassis dyno which forced me to learn more about computers to make it viable.

My goal this year to learn to weld aluminum and become a better machinist. I'm also working on adding electronic fuel injection to my British race bikes.

I'm now 74 and I try to learn something new every day.

As for advice, here is something that a Scout leader told us years ago. "The Lord gave you two eyes, two ears, and one mouth. The more you learn to keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth closed, the more you will learn."

Tom

I am now retired but spent my career in Manufacturing Engineering.
One saying that has stuck with me that an old boss said to me when I was about 25 (jeez--that is now over 50 years ago) was:
"The guy who never made a mistake never made anything".

I think I'm wearing out the "Like" button... (not a saying, just a comment)

"If it ain't broke, fix it 'till you are!" -me

"It's too bad when something's not too good; but if it's not too bad, that's good" -me

"The iron in your blood should be British (or Vintage)" -me

I've heard lots of really good ones from others, I'll remember a few and re-post...

Mr Harris (RIP) commented when we were discussing what tools to carry on your motorcycle.

I'm paraphrasing but it went something like this.

"If you do your homework in the garage......you won't need all those tools"

Gordon

Everything will be alright in the end, if it's not alright it's not the end. Useful when you tear something apart for the third time.

55 years ago, I worked for a company named Barber-Greene, which made pavers and ditch-diggers.
The company's engineering screw-ups were legendary.

Our inside joke was "We don't have time to do it right, but always have time to do it over again."
