After firing up the Indian Chief a few times and having got it running, I was cleaning up and apparently this fell off or out of the motorcycle. It is 2-1/8" long, about 5/16" round, threaded on one end and unthreaded on the other. The hole does not go thru. The threaded end depth is about 7/8" deep and the unthreaded end the hole is just over 1/2" deep.
I don't know where it fell from but it landed just behind the centerstand left leg.
Any idea what this is - is it even a motorcycle part?

Do not know the "chiefs" at all, but maybe check the thread count to determine if it is an English thread? That might tell you if it even belongs on the bike. (Given that yours is a '59 if memory serves, it shouldn't be metric or American thread?)

Good idea. A known 10-32 US thread pattern screw fits correctly. Two small screws from the Indian did not thread in properly. So it appears to be some random part the PO left for me. Sorry for the false alarm!

Perhaps to play it safe, an underside inspection is not a bad idea- throw a mirror under the bike and some good light, look for a similar sized hole or screw popping out; see if maybe it braced something in place??
