Three phase. Potting material is preventing my 1/2” socket from seating on the nut. All three studs, no bueno.

Do I need to grind down a socket? I have a thin ring spanned for the 12-point nuts on the barrel to crankcase nuts, even that doesn’t fit.

Was thinking about using a Dremel to relieve the potting material around the studs/nuts, but don’t want to damage any of the coils.

Anyone else tackle this problem? Solutions?

The green stator material is easier to grind down

Use a Dremel and follow the existing radius to enlarge the area you are working with

Always used a Box spanner as it very easily goes over the two longer studs at the front as well.

Small hex nuts?
You can get 12 point in 5/16” UNF, T140 barrel nuts for a start.

Hi Steve, Recently I installed same SPARX stator. I ground 1/2” deep socket to paper thin. That’s basically what you’ll end up doing. Or bring box wrench. So thin it started cracking.

I don’t know where mainland is for location. As tinkertoo said going together use 7/16 wrench size nuts. That wrench size in lock nut not stocked anywhere I could find. eBay has them.

What I ended doing is getting 1/2 fine thread coupling nuts from Ace hardware. Cut them shorter. Used split type thin wall lock washers & trace of blue lock tight. I still had to grind 7/16 deep socket.

Cutting potting back, I don’t know what to say. I had old melted Wassell stator. It also was very close but ground socket worked fine. I took Dremel & cut bac potting to see. Less than 1/16” to wire…. So go easy. The flare of potting at base I cut back slightly.

Rotor clearance was problematic. I trial fitted 2 original stators. They cleared rotor perfectly. Slid onto studs perfectly. So studs straight & true to center.

I had to sand potting between poles a lot. Slightly over a few poles. You could visually see the high spots. Used 80 grit sandpaper. Sands nicely.

8 hours of fiddling later it changed perfectly.

To file laminated stack I held carefully in vise with smooth jaws & small c clamp to help pinch stack tight. A lot of trial fitting.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Seems everyone has their favorite fix for problems like these. It's good to have choices! smile

Charging system works fine, just need to remove this stuff as I'm going deep into the gearbox and the transmission has to come apart. This is a running bike, but I'm glad I'm going over all the systems. I'll let you know how I get along.....
