So I’m back in the Triumph kick again I guess. Guy had a 1979 T140 on FB Marketplace. He had it listed for $1000, but I pulled a Frank Fritz and ask if he would take $800, which he quickly agreed. I’m not able to see a frame number on it, but the engine serial number has actually 2 numbers. The first stamped number reads T140ES. The other number is 2CM030978. Tires are shot, but the seat is in great shape, and the tank will require light rust removal, and a new paint job. It’s pretty much all there, just in DIRE need of rescue from the Lavonia Georgia rednecks that have a few “engineered” mods. The gauges say “Veglia”, which I’m not sure of their originality....exhaust is all there and in good shape except for rust on the left header pipe. Compression is 120/150, with good oil flow back to the OIF tank. I would upload photos, but this antiquated I-pad won’t do it......Good to be back!

It DOES look like junk right now, but that’s what drives me. It has good bones, and LOTS of potential! Lucky #13 restoration!

Can’t identify the engine serial number......clearly stamped “2CM030978”. Any ideas?

T140's in 79 had veglia instruments and a centre binnacle with idiot lights and ignition.

I don't believe there were any engine numbers with an M. N - yes.

Is the engine number on a raise pad with a series of small Triumph logos stamped before the numbers were?

Don't know the USA system but I guess if you have paperwork that may not be an issue?
The frame number should be stamped on the headstock area of the LH downtube. (Not always)
The number is often painted over.

There is another thread on this topic, stating the "CM" stamping was legit according to "a note". I replied, questioning the provenance of "the note".

...awaiting a reply...

"NOTE: From 031701 (zero prefix added) October 10, 1981 thru 032213 January 1, 1983 motorcycles for U.S. market were prefixed 'CM' with no date code.
Done to overcome some export restrictions which dating could have caused problems.

I recently acquired an '82 TMA Royal (with KNOWN provenance) that has a number about 300 after this one. The numbers/stampings on DPO's bike appear legit...

FWIW, DPO,

I am extremely impressed with your ability/luck to be able to have scored an electric start T140 in that condition for $800!! If there was some type of award for extraordinary excellence in achievement, similar to what we have in the Army, you would get it. Well done!!

The TOMCC web site has this to offer on the later VINs. Based on this the frame should have the ISO type full VIN, so also includes the T140ES if not other models not just the TSX:

1981 to 1983
Frame and engine numbers matched. Month prefixes as for 1969 to 1980 but year prefix now gets additional letter. TSXs were exported to the USA which required ISO 3779 VINs with the first letter being the model year code and the M indicating the factory (Meriden) followed by 6 digits (e.g. SCGB75502CM032050).

1981KDA28001 to JDA29443 (Sep 1980 to Aug 1981)

1982EDA30001 to BDA31693 (May 1981 to Feb 1982)

1982NDA31901 to BDA31925 (Oct 1981 to Feb 1982)

1982CM031701 to CM032213 (Oct 1981 to Jan 1983 - TSX)

Coming along…new tires and tubes installed, tank and side covers painted. I used Autozone Dupli-color in two tone black and blue fade, with 3 coats of clear coat. Pazon installed as well as new battery.

Hi DPO

The 1981-3 TMA models had a unique VIN code then mandated by American legislation. They also had a VIN plate stamped with the frame code riveted to the frame headstock.

Other Triumph markets kept the stamped frames with the standard meriden dating code.

The 1981 Royal Wedding models had a Commemorative plate (detailing the nuptials) affixed to the headstock but also stamped with the standard dating code. The 1982 TMA Royal that JubeePrince had the standard TMA VIN plate as it didn’t commemorate the event that had by then past.

As for the TMA VIN code, this is what the collective intelligence has found:

The SC is for the UK.
The first stamped number (or an X) is the ‘check digit’ : there surely must be a pattern to that but I can’t detect it.

The B or C stamp is for 1982 or 1983 and the M is for Meriden. However , if the Wikipedia entry on VIN is correct then instead the earlier G stamp stands for Meriden.

The 0 is a filler for the five digit number that fits in with the factory build book entry

I’ll look into your numbers in particular as regards what can be found as regards the original supplying dealership.
