So I was invited on a ride by the friends I met working in Texas a few years ago and I decided to join them...

7 Days riding the Smokey mountain area and ending at the Barber museum this coming weekend.

Great bunch of guys with some fantastic bikes.

We have already ridden the Cherohala Skyway (yesterday) and the roads between Gatlinburg and Asheville NC were pretty great too.... We have three Chase trucks and about 7 or 8 spare bikes... One of the chase trucks broke down but we quickly got that towed away for a new transmission and got a rental to pull the trailer...

I'll add to the story later ... Its time to ride the Dragon ... Gerry will ride with me today.... Up until now she has been following in the Jeep that I hauled my 72 Triumph down on...

Meanwhile here are some photos that I and others have taken so far..

These were just the back up bikes in one of the 4 trailers that followed us every day. Luckly only two bikes were needed the whole trip.
A Japanese 400 broke down and a Norton exploded a gear box

[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]
Other bikes needed fixing along the way but nothing that couldnt be taken care of at a gas stop.

This guy Alton was the main chase truck driver.. Logistically he made this ride happen... Prior to the ride he had picked up all of the bikes in California and took them to Tennessee . Then back to Texas to get the Texan's bikes and bring them to Asheville.... Drive the chase truck during the ride , then on the last day, take the spare bikes back to Texas and come back for the California and Texas bikes for the final trip home... I assume that he will then take the California bikes back to CA as well... My kinda guy.... Not sure if I drive that much but I might ....

A pretty fantastic lunch at this place and with almost 30 bikes in the parking lot we made quite a scene

My bike did really well for the whole trip but I started to get lighting issues after an hour or two of riding a solid 80 mph at 5000 RPMs ... I think the vibrations (although not bad) did a number on the wiring... More on that later

Some of us had more than bikes in common. tree of four of us were photographers. Some professionally working and some trained but moved onto other careers ... Some actually got their cool film cameras out and used them. I brought mine with me but only shoot with my digital because I was too busy taking it all in to think about the preciousness of each frame.... Especially at Barber museum where I took 100s of pictures of bikes... Wouldn't have done that on film

Gerry picked up some Georgia peaches while we were riding TASTY !!!

Once in Robbinsville we had a free day to ride any road we wanted too. We all choose the Dragon . Although at different times. Gerry is alway chilly about getting on a bike so we got a really lat start but she would up having a great afternoon .... More photos of that later too.

The Two Wheel Inn was a pretty great motel with each room having its own garage... We didnt need to set up our own EZUP in the parking lot here since they had a pavilion were we stayed up pretty late talking and playing music and trying to empty the many booze coolers... I think someone was refilling themshocked

A bit of a bother flipping my laptop upside down, but looks like fun.

That's a pretty large group! Kinda like herding cats...

Wade, you are right next door! The only thing running, at the moment, is the BMW, but If you are about and want to stop, let me know.

I recognize that ridge line. From left, Mt. Guyot, Mt. LeConte, Newfound Gap, and Clingman's Dome.
I really need to get back to Hunt's Lodge campground, at the Tennessee end of the Cherohala. It's only about 75 miles from my door. I've only driven that road in a Honda CRX, great fun. laugh
Thanks for the pictures Wade!

I know the feeling. The crowd I ride with just keeps going until they hit reserve. I don't know how you had the opportunity to take pictures at all.
Hope y'all enjoyed some of my favorite roads and views.

These were a couple of people that I met when I was living/working in Texas. I knew a few of them from that time but all the California people were new to me.
But they all ride together once a year apparently. I was lucky to be invited along this time.... Gerry was well liked so maybe we will get invited again wink

This bike was new to me last year. I had to put new tires on it so I decided to forgo my usual thinking and go modern tread. Its a 5 speed and it seemed up to the type of riding the group said it would be... Fast wet and curvy... And fast.... So Ive been riding it a lot prior to work out any bugs and to feel comfortable on it... So yes I have been riding it a lot.... I love it.. STILL I am a BSA guy though... If I get to ride with them again I may prepare a BSA in the same way... No one there had a BSA and I like to be different....

No time on this trip but now that I have the itinerary, Id love to do it again sometime.... At a slower pace maybe so I can stop to smell the roses (and see some friends ... you guys that live there) No idea when I'll be able to pull that off but I am pretty sure I can get Tom and Brian to tag along if not more people....

OK all of that fixed and questions answered and commentary added to the first three posts...

Now ... next a little more detail.

The texas folks and the California folk flew into Asheville NC over the weekend and their bikes were all delivered by the 4 chase trucks. Gerry and I drove down on Sunday... Much later then I wanted to but thats the way it goes... Plenty of time to grab a bite to eat say hello to everyone and unload my bike before dark...
Next day we rode to Canton .... The long way!! Gerry took the jeep to the hotel after a leisurely morning and getting her nails done .... TMI shocked

Ride maps will be posted.

I think it was only 30 some miles to the Hotel but we rode 185 miles... this was the only day we got lost (took a detour from the ride map) since the roads are not marked very well... We got back on track and found our lunch spot at the Blue Rooster.

Second day was Blue Ridge Parkway time, Canton to Gatlinburg (to see a boy named Sue) Stayed at the Bearskin Lodge and had a pretty awesome Ribeye steak dinner. ... Walked around town with Gerry and fought our way thru hoards of tourist... Worse then Times Square actually .... Cant imagine what it is like on a weekend

We hung out in the parking lot after dinner and I found room in my belly for a few drinks... I didnt mention that I had two dinners.... Gerry didnt want to go to the steak house so we went and had a meal in town... Two hours later I was eating steak with my friends while she went to the room...

All still out there. Moose makes 2 models, Enduro Engineering as well. Models with a magnifier lens are out there too.

There are also larger roll chart holders used in Rally cars.

Day 3 Spirits High !!!!

Gatlinburg to Robbinsville via the Cherohala Skyway .. We were supposed to have lunch at the Snowbird Picnic Area but the food was on the chase truck and it got lost so we moved on . We had some snacks when we got to the Two Wheel Inn and there was a dinner arranged at the adjacent restaurant. It was closed that day but a pre arrangement saw us eating a prefix meal of fried chicken and steak and veg... Veggie option for the Vegetarians and they gave me extra steak since I couldn't eat the breaded chicken. Dessert and BYOB made for a fantastic meal... Our ride host picked up the whole tab... We just tipped the wait staff.

Next day we had a free day.... Gerry seemed to be dragging her feet getting ready to ride the Dragon with me so instead of getting mad I posted the upside down pictures that you saw before... Then she was ready and I didnt have time to fix them...

She was steering me from the time we left the motel till we got to the Dragon... I told her not to do anything to distract me on the dragon or I wouldn't be able to concentrate on the 318 curves in the 11 mile stretch.. She actually started looking thru the turns as if she was riding and stopped looking at the road beneath us as we wound thru the curves... She started to relax and was a very good passenger.... We continued on after the Tail of the Dragon and rode part of the Foothills Parkway. Turned around and did the Dragon the other direction where Gerry said she was actually putting her knee out going around the curves... I thought the bike was doing a little more of the work wink

Then we stopped at the Deals Gaap shop and picked up some souvenir items and looked around . Then continued on to the Historic Topoco Lodge for a pretty awesome Trout lunch

We were all using WhatsApp to communicate if someone got lost or we had to drop a pin for someone to find us or to call the chase truck if needed so when ever anyone post pictures there then we all get them... BRILLIANT!!!

Here are some of the shared photos
