Can anyone recommend a good aftermarket carburetor to replace the stock AMAL?

I recommend replacing your old AMAL with a new AMAL Premier Concentric carb

Other alternatives like the Wassell Evolution carburetors are very nice too and more affordable than the Premiers

There are a few choices outside of AMAL and Mikuni carbs.

There are the PWK carbs, such as this one available from Lowbrow Customs and many other suppliers:
