tomoil, all the info you need can be found in the old threads, with the change that we no longer ride out of the motel in Blowing Rock. Most of us camp at Windy;s with some staying at the Americourt {?} inn in mountain city. the ride on the 14th is just a one day 200 mile, but most of us {again} feel that it's too far to go for one day so we start showing up around Monday thru Wedsnday to look for new roads and smoke cigars around the campfire. that is if Windy has any fire wood.

I’ll bring my Firebird (with a new clutch cable), and my ‘82 Electro on the trailer as a spare in the event someone needs a bike to ride…

I advise anyone that buys a used bike to ALWAYS replace at minimum the clutch and brake cables or all the cables if you have the extra dosh, it is just cheap insurance on a high failure item, see you in may, I’ll bring my Firebird (with a new clutch cable), and my ‘82 Electro on the trailer as a spare in the event someone needs a bike to ride…

I’m planning on being there. At this time I actually plan on attending as a rider for the first time. (after 20+years) I’ll gladly lead/join a group that would rather see the sights/scenery instead of having to constantly focus on tail lights and blacktop for 200 miles.
Watch me end up on the chase truck……that would be appropriate.

Yea, maybe to the first gas stop!!!! Boredom will have set in by then. We always ( I think? ) had good success with having two groups. I don’t necessarily equate speed with “good” (on public roads). I’d rather follow Mr Bryan ( aka BeezaBryan) than anybody else I’ve ever ridden with. In my book he’s the best rider I’ve been behind. Mr Dick Harris was a very close second. My bet is both of those gentlemen can ride fast if they wanted to. But I understand that’s not how everyone feels and l’m okay with that. Gordon

with the changes that have happened in the last 2 years it has been a small group, some new roads, some old roads and no parkway.it has also had me do the leading so it has been a relaxed pace ( don't go there Gordon ) and still 3 stops, I would like to figure out how to get in some of the parkway but so far does not look good. for the early arrivals we can still do that if wanted, Gordon I would never ask you to run the chase truck BUT you might be asked to lead a group, turn about is fair play LOL , all joking aside I would love have you here to enjoy a ride, on a motorcycle you put so much into even if it is not the same route end to end,

Windy wrote.... You got the handle on that part of the world now and I bet there are some interesting roads. I'd need some time to study a route if you want me to lead one......but would be more than happy to do so. "turn about is fair play"........yes sir, I leaned hard on you when I needed help. Hat's off to you for stepping up. I'm in this year..(2022)....Good Lord willing Gordon PS: Parkway photos deleted... ...one with split rail is actually on 58.

There was no need to deleat the parkway pics as it had been a part of this ride for many years and it was good to be reminded of that part of it. If yoy like i can send you the directions for last years ride so you can see where we went.

A different loop will be exciting.......believe me, I've been around the old loop to many times to count. I'm looking forward to something different. If and when you get time please send me the directions and I'll start learning the new parts.
The Parkway is nice and folks come from a long way off to ride up there.......but you know as well as I do that there are plenty of other options. Honestly my favorite section of the Parkway is from Cherokee to Asheville........really hard to beat that. Pretty much all we have at this end is the Viaduct.

.........snip.......but i think you know i was pretty good on a mountain road. Everyone is better than me on a mountain road.......I remember Bob finding out how good you were/are. No insult intended.......I was born and raised in Tallahassee. Been all over the state. Tallahassee was built on 7 hills. I took my kids back there for the first time ( Born in NC) and all they had to say was "Where are the hills?" Our only real curves around Tallahassee are on 98 by the Gulf. Just sharing some cracker humor with ya, thought you might be getting home sick........Gordon

I got something unexpected in the mail today ....
A Christmas card hand-addressed to me from the Shady Valley Country Store!
I'm trying to figure out how the heck they knew I was a regular there, well, somewhat regular whenever we ride through. I always use cash, I don't think I ever filled out a journal entry of any kind, and they must have THOUSANDS of people that come through there.
Anyone else get one?

I also need to here who wants a cabin?

You mentioned the Americourt in Mountain City .... I stayed there last year. It's an older motel, but it was well run by friendly people, and was clean. $198 all told for three days is a pretty good deal for anyone's motel.
At first I thought it was not going to be so good, since it looked like there were local folks staying there sort of permanently, and that's a BAD danger sign usually. But every person I met there was friendly, talkative, and interested in my Norton, most of them actually knew what it was. Some locals, some traveling through like me, some construction workers.
It's a 15 mile ride, 25 minutes or so, to the campground, but means that you have to ride The Snake at least four times a day ... Oh no, what a tragedy! I was actually getting good at it before I was done.

I’m planning on being there. At this time I actually plan on attending as a rider for the first time. (after 20+years) I’ll gladly lead/join a group that would rather see the sights/scenery instead of having to constantly focus on tail lights and blacktop for 200 miles. I'll ride with Gordon. I like to stop and take pictures any place that looks interesting. All y'all just keep going until somebody hits reserve (or a deer.) Besides, I think I can keep up with a BSA single. Don't know when I'll arrive. I'd like to check out the roads around Harlan, KY on the way there.

David......when there's a chase vehicle you owe it to them to not make unscheduled stops. What I meant about "see the sights" is that if the speed limit is 55.......I'm going to do that and not 70-75.
I'm the kind of rider who doesn't like gearing up.....doing a 50 loop around the house and that's it. I like to get on the bike and ride......it takes about 100 miles ( first gas stop) for me to get in the "zone" then I can ride all day long. I LOVE waking up in the morning and the only thing familiar to me is my bike. The ride up to Mike G's OSMR is a perfect example of the type of riding I like ( 1200 +- MILES) . I really don't care for riding with others because I like to stop/start when I want to.
That said........the BEST group riding I've done is at Mike's OSMR. I'm always trying to keep up but so far they have never made me feel like I was holding them back. I've also never lost eye contact with everyone.......always been someone willing to ride along with me.
I still need to learn Windy's new route before I lead a group.....I'm pretty sure I know the first half and I've been on those roads a lot but the way he gets around the lake???? Not sure of that part. Hopefully one of the tech types has the route mapped??????

Has the route mapped? That would be great! I could stop as often as I like and not get lost. I guess that defeats the purpose of a group ride?

David.......I'm hoping someone has a map but I haven't seen anything. Just a telephone conversation with Windy and I was following along pretty good until he got to the lake then it got sketchy.
Mike Gs OSMR doesn't usually have a chase.......but you're really never that far away from the motel......hence using a "Loop".
Me and Mike King are still debating whether or not to use a chase at the Beach Run in March. Without a chase riders could pick their own route and just show up at lunch and dinner at appointed times. Gives the fast guys an option of not being held up by the slow guys. We will have maps at that event.
I'm hoping to lead a group at Windy's ride but it's really going to be more about who shows up. If I'm the only slow guy.......I'll just go on my own....no worries I know the roads well enough to get where I want to.
But you're right about a "group" ride.........and I'm not sure what the definition of that really is. Honestly I think we don't give the Harley guys enough credit.

just one of the reasons it is done this way is there is a LOT of the aria that has NO cell service so if something goes wrong there is a chase truck close by, we have also on the ride for the last 2 years had helmet communication from the leader to the sweep so when we come to a turn he can let the leader know that all is well with the group, I am not telling you what to do but if you want to stop when ever you want than THAT WILL BE ON YOU as we are all adults, I will work on a route sheet as a hand out also.I will again state THIS IS A GROUP RIDE, Has the route mapped? That would be great! I could stop as often as I like and not get lost. I guess that defeats the purpose of a group ride?

I tried to trace the route from last year, but once I got off 58 I'm lost as to where we went. Can I Google the Goat Path?

David you left 58 then traveled back towards the intersection of 321 and 421. ( heading southwest?) Having lunch at what was the first gas stop. I “ think” the road he takes actually changes names at the state line???? Not sure how he gets you back to the Goat Path ( hwy 194). We through a short cut in to keep us from having to make a left turn against traffic on hwy 421/321 but if your running it backwards it would make it a right hand turn onto the goat path off of 421 and IMO adding a pretty nice section to it.
I find it hard to believe someone like Semper hasn’t plotted the new route.
IMO the more people who know the route the better.
I would also be interested in the radio communication equipment. I’d be up for adding that to my gear.

I'll have to cut up three state maps and assemble into one master to figure it out. Of course, some of those roads might not be on anything but a county map. Better still, does Waze have a record function?

Okay........no guarantee on the "waterproofness" of the tent but it is a TWO room deal and I "think" I still have queen sized air mattresses for each room. I can bring my expanding poles/rope/stakes and the biggest tarps I have. Plus chairs. So that'll save ya a bit of trouble I KNOW it was the right thing to do.........getting rid of all my canopies but................................Gordon ![[Linked Image]](https://www.britbike.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/download/Number/15802/filename/279511973_5428843143793742_6625141807133496287_n.jpg)

Looking at the weather forecast, it don't look good.
We gonna get wet on this one. Sometime during the week

Lannis can tell you about the first TSMR........that rain was epic. Mike's leather jacket musta weighed 100lbs. In 15 years it didn't rain one time inside the chase vehicle. See ya soon......G

Rich won't melt but if it's predicted to rain every day he ain't feeling like riding out thru bad weather when he can trailer (did I just say that? ) and have a dry place to sit and watch the world go by.

I find it hard to believe someone like Semper hasn’t plotted the new route. Gordon As I remember we took a right turn off of something to take the goat path last year. That was close to the end of our ride. I've been zooming and scanning Google maps and got about as far as the first fuel stop. Surprised that there's no Possum Hollow in the names of those roads. Here in Tennessee if there's no hollow, ridge, or ford in the name the road is pretty lame.

David, Grand Paul ( thank you again) taught me how to “plot” a route on Google maps but I accidentally deleted Windy’s written directions he sent me a couple months back.
He’s been busy and I don’t want to bother him about it.
So……at this point I don’t have a route map.
I’m just gona jump into the middle of the pack and try my best to keep up. If that doesn’t work I’ll bail and make my own way back.
richrd says it’s going to rain……..the weather has been spotty the past couple of months. Can’t really tell when or where a cell will pop up. But so far around my place ( I’m about 80 miles from Windy’s) the forecast has been wrong more than right.
See ya soon…….G

May I suggest that everyone who is trailering in bring some fire wood, so we don't have to tear down any more of windy's fences.

Lots of states don't let you bring in firewood from other states. Not sure if it's to keep unwanted wood living critters out or local loggers employed but Mass and Connecticut both have big signs as you cross the border on I91 south.

I say chaps I was wondering if all y'all wouldn't mind little old me showing up in 2023...? Can't leave our Kev all on his own, not with them Alligators about.... Now dude's, ifn I got this right y'all now camp at Windy's, well we can't bring our camping gear in that Kerosene Pigeon, so is there an alternative that we could use. We'll sort things like bike loan nearer the time, but any offers would surely be rewarded with Ale. Especially for bikes that can make it to Maggie Valley and back, sure do have a hankering for a Wheels Through time museum visit again.... Tell Wade the Red Pants are coming....

Well i would be more than honored to break bread with you lot but we will not have any if that queen - king stuff on this side of the pond as we done sorted that out. As for camping there are more options round the corner so you can be well taken care of.

Gee thanks Windy dude, I'll await your instructions, might be best to give me a shout over in the Rod and Tappet, I keep forgetting there's a bunch of stuff outside...
