If you are not a slave to original pieces, early unit single side stands make a suitable replacement. The early unit single side stand needs some minor modifications to go over center when extended. But otherwise they work

Am I right in saying that side stands were not fitted as standard on at least the DBD's ? Whilst looking at potential machines to buy and on the machine I've acquired the side stand is not fitted although the 'back half' of the attachment lug is on the frame. There is as far as I can see no side stand listed in the DBD parts book and wondered if this was an optional extra ?

Anybody know the full story on this..........

Clubmans Goldstar was conceived as a production race bike. A side stand hinders cornering clearance on the left side. You seldom see Goldstars fitted with sidestands in photos from England. I would suspect they were an added option at the insistence of lazy Yanks. I've seen many frames (and owned a few) which were broken where the side stand mounts.

Speaking as a lazy Yank, I'd like to have a side stand on my Catalina and BB (yes, I know I could add them myself, but I'm a lazy Yank). However, my DBD Competition came with a sidestand. I'd be interested in hearing from other Competition owners whether theirs came that way, or if mine possibly was added by a previous owner.

Well, according to VMCC this lazy Yank's '56 DB34GS left the works as a scrambler, but had absolutely no signs of ever having a side stand. So I welded one on 'cause the stock center stand is useless in the dirt. I guess even lazy Yanks have their limits. (BTW, lazy folk can be very creative when they work on ways to make life easy.)

My '63 Competition "All Sport" also has a side stand. IMHO, I believe all the Gold Star frames probably left the factory with the sidestand mounting lug but not all got a sidestand mounted.

My 62 All Sport frame has no evidence of ever having the side stand attachment. However a 58 frame that left the factory as B34 Scram had a ripped out section of the lower frame rail where a side stand mount would have been.

Considering that they all came out of the comp shop and were very much a bespoke build and being aware that BSA were never one to refuse anything if the owner was willing to pay enough. one might be forgiven for making an unsubstantiated assumption that if you wanted a side stand & were happy to pay extra then BSA would oblige .
Had a flip through some catalogues, but side / prop stands were not listed as optional extras.
However I have seen several goldies with a closed tube forged / cast mount braised onto the frame so they could have been available, or the bikes seen could all have been GS look alikes , there were ( and still are ) a lot of them around.

A bit more information........

I've acquired a 1958 UK GS price list and the optional extra list does not include any mention of a side stand. The April 1962 combined UK price list does include the option of a side stand in the general range extras (there is a GS specific optional extras section) including B34.

I checked the frame of my as-yet-incomplete 1960 Catalina, and it HAS the side-stand mount on the frame.

If it didn't, would BSA have supplied each Gold Star Catalina with a portable tree or fence post to lean it against when parked?

Kind of like the first P-11 Nortons, which had their side stands break off in the first week of ownership?
All of them in my area were seen parked leaning against a wall, a tree, or a fence.

Folks are discussing slightly older Goldie's here but I've wondered the same thing. On my BB34 dated 1953 there is no boss or bracket for kickstand. Dispatch records say this bike was originally intended for Rich Child on eastcoast usa. Bike wound up being delivered instead to Hap Alzina on west coast. Not sure if that sheds any light on east vs west coast standards But this bike, intended for east coast but ending up on west coast, did not but come with a kickstand from BSA. Unless someone ground everything off. Which I suppose is possible. Clean frame though.

Hello, to add some info;

In my original Goldstar partsbook of 1954 models, there is no mention of a side stand, and neither in the supplement sheets for 1955/56/57.
Although a side stand mount on the frame (frame-part no; 42-4209) can be clearly seen on the drawing in that same partsbook.

Back when that parts book was printed, the frame would have taken about 2 days ( or more ) to draw from scratch.
As such BSA printing department used physical cut & paste to make composite plates to print the parts books from .
Or they would make a dyeline copy and scrape the unwanted bits off the transparency then draw in the modifications, make a posative of that then cut & paste .
Or do a tracing of the original including the modifications , about a full days work for a fast draftsperson and again print a posative then cut & paste

It is a lot of work thus a large on cost particularly for a low volume production model

While the printing department would have been compiling the parts books using production drawings, things like a lug that was not to be slipped onto the tubes before they are braised / welded together could be accomodated by a simple note " not fitted to GS frames , prefixed XYZ " writen on a working drawing.

Thus what is shown is often not identical to the actual part it depicts .

A long while back we used to get the exploded views of the complete engines blown up as large as 2.5' x4' ( movie poster size ) then laminated for use in sheds.
Some one with a sharper eye that me noticed that the A 75 drawing showed a cam that would be impossible to fit because they had again, cut 2 cam drawings the pasted them together , not quite correctly.
The drafting / printing department was not full of competiant mechanics .

The 54 catalog shows the frame illustrated with the inner side stand lug attached, but no mention of a prop stand. Same for the 58 on parts book.
While going through my parts books and supplements, I found this in an 8 page supplement to the 1954 G.S. parts book.

1955 Specification Frame and fittings
Gold Star models 350cc and 500cc
As 1954 models except the following:

Added: 350cc and 500cc Prop stand assembly complete with lugs, bolts and washers (clip on type) 42-4785

Interestingly, the A twins show and list a prop stand from 1954 to 1960. Only the leg is the same (42-4772)

Five of the six G.S. frames I have, the inside lug is there. I'm of the opinion that all the GS frames had the inside lug and the prop stand was a dealer add on.

Although my machine is a bitsa replica (late 54 frame with 53 BB32GS bottom end and 52 ZB 34 GS internals) I installed a ‘replica’ side stand using the factory bracket (mainly for quick stops as hauling on the centre stand is quite a purposeful procedure!)
I found the ground clearance seriously impaired at first and had to grind the inside flat of the stand to allow it to tuck well up under the chain case and ‘dressed’ the foot plate.
Now the footrest (it’s in touring spec) touches down on tight left handers about the same time - the joys of modern tyres!

A sort after item.......

A nos side stand c/w the 'other' half of the mounting lug, one attachment bolt and spring just made £256 on UK ebay............

Ouch.
I bought mine from one of the U.K. suppliers and I was quite a wait as they were on back order.
Seems good quality although as above needed fettling to be able to tuck it away, not ground too soon and go over centre enough for the bike not to sit too upright and hence stable. Don’t want to trash it falling over.
Although it’s a bitsa it looks pretty and as Phil Pearson rebuilt the engine for me it goes reasonably well although does not pull more than 5,500 in top (with 20T engine sprocket.
I’ll be seeking expert advice here about options. Also ik. Post pics if anyone interested.
