Not really remoteness as much as having that big moat which limits ways of getting in and out. Australia and NZ used slightly different versions of restricting incoming travel, imposing quarantine for anybody coming in, and contact tracing.
There is still the occasional breakdown in quarantine, but having very low infection numbers makes any resulting infections easier to get on top of.

We both had significant numbers of Chinese and Indian students and tourists because we're comparatively close to China. Prior to the international travel restrictions, most of the major Asian airlines had reasonably frequent flights. I think there were at least 4 mainland Chinese airlines flying here as well as Hong Kong based Cathay Pacific when we booked flights to the UK for the 2019 BSA International. There were also Malaysian, Vietnamese, Thai, Indian and Singapore airlines handling flights to Asia, India and Europe.

I thought I might have to hang in there and work another couple of years, but I ran and reran the numbers and figured that I could do it at age 60. Joined a medical co-op that was cheap and covered big items, had to wait a couple years for Social Security to kick in (we can start it at age 62) but had saved enough to cover us until then, and I already had decent life insurance to cover Fay if a texter managed to get far enough into my lane to send me to the big highway in the sky; we agreed on a spending plan, and off I went. Five years now, and it's working splendidly .... !

It's telling me an isolated island with a limited population can control the disease easier than non isolated countries with many times the population..Hey my Ducati is way faster than any Meriden Triumph, how about that? grin

Another thang Lannis lad, when I was 28 I thought I'd get me some sort of retirement plan into action, had it all worked out that once the house was paid for, I'd have stacks of cash and could walk away from work at 55. Well that's what the man in the nice suit and fancy car told me, as he looked on his fancy laptop, little did I know that people like him were ripping us mugs off BIG time. Didn't find that out till a few years later, the Government sent round a letter asking if we'd like to see if we were getting ripped off. Six months later I got the YES he was letter, that Bar Steward took life away from me as well as money, only thing that was compensation to me, was the fact I wasn't the only one, loads of people in the Whole country were being ripped off, mortgages and pensions being the biggest things.... cry

Took a few years to sort, and it meant I'd have to carry on another 10yrs longer at work, so I sucked it up and carried on, then 'They' said the pension age had changed from 65 to 70. Sorry lad, that was the FINAL straw, enough is enough, I'll be walking at 65 and will have to manage on what I have, until the proper pension helps out, found out I only have to wait till 67 for that to kick in, so just two years to live on me savings.... wink

As for the Covid....

When I was but a small boy, I was hearing about Measels everyone and their dog said, you can only get it once....

Even the Doctor that came round when I did get it said, you'll only have this once....

Yeah right, I've had it SIX times.... facepalm

How many times have I heard, well that's never happened before, OR, I've never known that to happen, when one of me bikes have blown up....

Or the best one, "they're bullet proof them you can't blow one of them up" only to get one, and blow it up....

SO on this occasion, I'm taking no chances, I'll have that injection as soon as it's offered, sod what anyone says..... thumbsup

...do not alters my perspective in any way. The same way that you mention, is the way that previous more lethal virus like H1N1 killed many. Now, you can have whatever other problem AND this virus but they treat like your only one is the covid 19. If you die, for the record you would die for covid and not for the other causes, like Cancer.

I know many here with the Covid and nothing happened with them. Different ages.
When I said not so lethal; still of course is the word "lethal"; but when some one is deep in fear there is no reasoning.
Also; if a person is religious, why so many fear? Will be a better Life after...

Having somebody you know hit by it brings it into more immediate focus.
I'm glad you got through the acute phase, and here's hoping the long term effects aren't all that bad.

So far, all indications are, I have no “long haul” issues as they are called.

I knew when I was in the hospital, I was in an “experimental” program for the Covid intestine. If you live (44% survival rate) thru the Covid intestine you are likely out of the woods.

The Covid pneumonia can cause significant damage to the lungs. One of my doctors had significant lung damage from her bout with Covid. Come to find out she had me on an “experimental” steroid cocktail that Cleveland Clinic is trying. Local hospital is part of CC, I was one of the first 3 locally to get the steroid cocktail. As of 3 weeks ago, my lungs are clear and working fine.

BTW, both pneumonia and intestine together, local doctors say their experience is under 30% survival rate. That is sobering.

My one long term thing is my sense of smell still has not fully returned. There are things I can smell ok, but that list is limited.

The one odd thing.....I have never lost my ability to smell or taste bacon.

Bacon is one of the 3 major food groups. How about the other 2 - (decent) beer and chocolate?

Chocolate was on of the first things I could taste, but still can’t smell chocolate. I can taste beer just fine, at best, there is a very faint smell.

I have only been drinking beer again for a few weeks. The old liver took a beating between the infection, blood thinners, steroids, and some other stuff. Had to wait to see what blood work came back with on the liver. It is finally behaving again.

Gentlemen, I'm informed that there are some people on this good Earth that believe there's some invisible man that will help them in times of trouble, there are some people that believe the Earth started only 6000yrs ago, some think that man never walked on the moon, or if your skin colour is different then you're somehow inferior to them..... ohno

All extremely strange, BUT and you'll see that's is indeed a big but, like Kermit and he's mates say, Vive La Difference. And for once I agree, so no matter who thinks what's right and wrong, let us get back to what we all know, and that is riding our lovely motorcycles in the Sunshine, with a smile in our hearts.... wink

Just sayin'

Rich- glad to hear you pulled through with minimal apparent damage. Best going forward.

For the record, there are 4 food groups: Fat, Beer, Sugar, and Caffeine. Anyone tells you different is pulling your leg.

Ummmmm.... NO.

Meat has to be in there, in place of fat. I never eat the fat.
