on this 1971 A65 triple clamp I am using the shims that accommodate 7/8" bars. I have torqued the clamp bolts down so hard I'm afraid they will snap, yet with a little pressure the bars still rotate. Is there any tips for resolving this? Thanks!

Are the two half pieces touching at both ends? If so this will stop the P clamp gripping the bars. The fix is easy, grind some of the shim away. If it isn’t touching at both sides then find yourself some new P clamps.
Also do your bars have the knurled sections for where the P clamps go?
There should also be some distance prices under the bolt heads and I believe the bolts should have a smaller hex. You might have a situation where the hex on your bolts is fouling the P clamp.

You were spot on, the shims were touching. I ground some off and now they clamp down properly. Thank you! btw, I'm going have to get used to these rubber mounts, not used to having and play at the handle bars. And they are a pain in the ass to install.

If the mounts are decent there shouldn’t be much play. The ones I’ve just fitted to mine take some effort for them to budge.
You can buy a kit compromising of all the rubber parts and metal cups etc. They don’t fit the way you would think and I believe this will effect how much rock there is also.

Do not go by the BSA parts book regarding the conical washers , the parts book only shows one per clamp, there should be two per clamp, top and bottom.
with the narrow part of the cones facing the rubbers.

If I use all the parts the book shows, the p clamps aren’t long enough Have they been cut down? perhaps converted to solid mounting without the cones, spacers, rubbers and cups? I know people who have done this, claiming they dont like the spongy feel. Personally, having suffered the vibration of missmounted rubbers for years, I was stoked when I got them right, its very fatiguing when they vibrate,, sup to you, I reccomend getting new Pclamps if you like a smooth ride.

It's odd to me that I only notice the wobble when pushing it around. Never while riding.
