Fellows,

I have a titled 1968 BSA A65.

Title reads - AC17260A65F, year model reads - 1968

Frame stamping reads - AC17260 above, A65F below

Engine stamping reads - AC17260 A65F Raised pad has BSA logo embossings

According to everything I know, this bike SHOULD be a 1969 model. However, the LEGAL DOCUMENT attached to it says it's a 1968.

I thought I had a '69 with a '68 front wheel (clearly, the front brake has the rearward-exiting brake cable, and fluted knave plate).

I believe the bike is "dressed" as a Lightning, it has dual carbs, but the Firebird should have scrambler pipes, not road pipes (as this one does). I've been told it has the "wrong" gas tank, too...

What else can I see, outwardly, that would sort this bike, apart from the high likelihood that it is a "bitsa"?

What say those of you who know?

For a B25/B44 the easy way to tell a 68 engine from a 69 is the outer casing screws, 1/4 BSF 26TPI for 68 and 1/4 UNC 20 TPI for 69.

The A65/A50 did the same change 68/69 with their cover screws.

So that tells you the year of the engine.

AC is Jan 69 so made in 69 to 69 model year, difficult to see how that could have been titled as a 68 as it would not have got to the US until Feb Mar 69.

Looking at the BSA factory dispatch books, AC17260 was assembled on 27/01/1969 and dispatched to BSA East coast on 28/01/1969.
It would have been a 1969 model.

So then the title information is incorrect as to YEAR.

That, and the '68 front wheel, gas tank, and pipes are incorrect.

Can anyone clarify re: gas tank?

Your complete front end is 68 Paul, the 69/70 bikes were fitted with a triumph front end. I’d say it was a left over and parts getting used up but my friends original bike has the triumph legs and that was built November 68 for 69 model year.

Your current tank is unique 67 export tank. Yours should have the scalloped tank like off the B25/B44 for the 69/70 model years. Both side panels should be steel, the LHS one should be a 3/4 version with a third oddie stud hole. Yours may still have the bracket there to mount on the LH battery carrier mounting bolt.

Rear brake plate is OIF with that web on the torque arm mounting. But this isn’t a bad upgrade if it has the matching brake cam and fully floating shoes.

The points/alternator inspection covers didn’t arrive until 70, they should be plain (I can swap you if you want it to be correct)

You should also have folding riders footrests.

Seat looks original and to be honest it’s a very nice looking bike.

Well, I have no interest in changing anything on the bike.

At this point, my main interest was in sorting out the potential discrepancy on the title (stating that the bike is a '68 model). I have heard numerous similar stories, and at this point I'm going to stop being concerned about it.

To all who have asked about the bike, I have been very plain that is is A) a "Bitsa" BSA, B) is a '68 according to the title, and C) has matching serial numbers that indicate the frame and engine cases are 1969 A65F model (title doesn't indicate model).

So, Full Disclosure, and "caveat emptor" right up front.

Titles get screwed up all too often.

I have a '70 Triumph T100R "Daytona" that some previous dumb-ass owner listed as a "Bonneville," probably because it has TWO carbs.

Or the owner had a front end prang, now that would never happen would it ?
down the the nearest bike breaker & buy a complete front end off a 68 with a blown engine ( none of them around was there )
The brag to his mates that he repaired the bike for $ 200 & the insurance company paid out $ 450 for the repair .

Allan, just for the record, I think this is wrong. My '68 A65L has the inspection covers, and they are shown in both the 1967 and 1968 Parts_Manuals.

I think I explained wrong, the covers arrived in 66/67, they had the logo for the 70 model range (from sept 69)

I'm sure that the model designation on titles varies from state to state.
My titles say A65, T15, and T12. Apparently Tennessee only has space for three digits on the title.
Still, the early date is a puzzle. My '72 Trident is titled as a '73, pretty common for a year-end model. I'm still waiting for the TR3OC to send an exact manufacturing date.
Maybe the guy at the DMV was still dating his checks 1968? laughing
