Recently bought a 1966 A65 Spitfire. It hadn't been run for 5 years. Changed all fluids and got it running. It smokes excessively on low RPM and misses. Opening throttle, smoking stops and so does missing. It has Boyer ignition fitted if that is relevant? Any suggestions as to cause of problem appreciated thank you.

Change all the oil and ride it 200 miles. I'm talking about LONG rides out through the country.

Usually the rings re-seat and it all starts doing better.

Sounds like it could be a problem with the scavenge side of the oil pump. I would remove the sump plate and check the non return ball in the return pipe, often the ball gets stuck with debris and cant empty the sump enough especially at low rpms.

It pays before replying to an old post by a new poster if they have bothered coming back to check the answers.

Case in point
