Can anyone enlighten me on what size the wheel bearings on 1968 A50/65 are and their equivalents?
I pretty sure they are all 7/8 X 2 X 9/16. But the only bearing spec BSA gives are Hoffmans, I would like an FAG,SKF, NKE (I think it would be an LJ7/8 for them) or similar, or indeed as many equivalents as possible. I don't want to knock the bearings out and have two wheels lying around while I try to source bearings.
Thanks.

According to BSA service sheet No. 703 the two crinkle hub bearings 65 5883 are Hoffman LS.9, Skefko RLS.7, Ramsome & Marles LJ7/8 and Fischer LS.9. The bearing in the brake hub 65 2045 is Hoffman 125, Skefko 6205, Ransome & Marles LJ.25 and Fischer 6205.

Karl;
your BI parts supplier should give you the answer concerning the bearings...
I do not have all the modern equivalents.
On my 69 Lightning the bearings in the front wheel I think they are 6204 ZZ, but I did not install them myself, the wheel builder's invoice says so. But your wheel is different, my bike got the 8"-2 LS brake.
The bearing in the brake drum (QD-hub) is 6205.2RSR (FAG). I have no idea about the specs of the other bearings in the rear wheel.

Hope this helps

I used to have a bearing Manual with all the cross references. Wish I took it with me when I retired. Any bearing supplier can provide you modern cross references. The are probably in a computer now. I have done it by searching on the net and then calling the supplier on an 800 number.

I have the same problem you have, mr Mike. Left my SKF catalogue when I left an offshore company,
but I still have the concepts of the item catalogue Manual I wrote for them, with some rolling element bearing information.
The info Phil gives indicate the bearing is a 1-row ball bearing. ZZ may be 2Z, indicating two steel grease retainer rings fixed to the outside ring keeping grease between the balls.
The indication 2RSR of FAG might indicate the same, but rubber rings.
The sizes 7/8 X 2 X 9/16 are than the ID(shaft) x OD x Width.
So ask your bearing supplier for a 1-row ball bearing that size with two grease retainer rings (either steel or rubber).

hello, I'm bringing up this thread from many years ago to see if there was any success sourcing A65/A50 front wheel bearings. for my 1970 A50 the Manual says 42-5819 (Hoffman120) but I have the conical brake as opposed to the twin leading shoe shown in the book. Also I have a screw in axle, this may not be the original front end. I bought a set of TPI bearings p/n 42-5819 but they are to small for the axle which measures 22.25mm thickness.

I don't have a bearing supplier to make requests... does anyone with the screw in axle know what bearings to use?

Do you mean the 71 onwards conical brake or the 8" single sided brake. The oif conical brake did not use a screw in axle but the 8" single sided brake did.

I found that Dragonfly lists the bearings as 65-5883. I found one and it fits.
