For me, it only depends on if the Blowing Rock Inn is open on May 15th- 17th.

If it is, Fay and I will be in room 222, and will ride a lovely 210 mile loop through 3 states on Saturday.

If it isn't, it might be just me at Switchback Creek campground, and riding a lovely 210 mile loop through 3 states on Saturday! Gonna take more than fear of some Asian germ to keep me away ...

I hope to make it this year on the K bike. I had this trip in mind when I bought that behemoth, but something always came up.
Not as much fun to ride in the mountains, but I'll be camping and it's the only pack mule I have.

I had really hoped on coming up this year, and still may be able to. The ‘71 four speed T120 is STILL waiting on parts. Finally got everything back, and the new rings had a gap of .070+. Will need a new duplex primary too, but bike is ready other than that. I made a bad decision on my last motorcycle camping trip last June, The enemy had a giant influence on me just outside of Dawsonville and ended up “partaking the forbidden fruit”. Right now, we’re trying with all that we have to save the marriage that I decided to put in danger. Our prognosis is great today, but changes every couple days, so I don’t know. Could happen I suppose!

Hope you'll be able to make it. Anyone can screw up, but it takes a good man to say "I screwed up, and I'm going to do my best to make it right". Good luck and hope you get the T120 back on the road also ....

I heard from Melissa yesterday. They plan on being open, so I made a reservation, subject to whatever happens between now and then.
I could camp, but a hot shower and a real bed is awfully hard to pass up.

July weather in the high country is beautiful. With the added benefit of better chance of dry skys.

Fingers crossed, keep us posted.
If all goes as planned I'll need one camping spot for three nights, one bike and a tiny tent.

Well, if the Inn is closed, and if you're "allowed" to keep the campground "open" (whatever that means), I'm willing to run the gauntlet and come and camp that weekend for the ride. Probably won't be many of us in that case, but on the other hand there were only 6 or so of us for the very first one .... !

so far Tn has not had a lock down so the campground is open and i will run it from here with a few changes. i hope that Nc will open things up so our inn keeper will let us stay there. we still have 3 1/2 weeks to go and things can and will change as we have seen. one way or another i still plan to do this..

Ton Up Nashville posted that riding is OK as long as no big groups. Lannis would know about Virginia.
We'll just have to build a bigger campfire to keep our distance from each other.

It's sort of whatever you can get by with, in this part of the country. I haven't seen a police cruiser on the road in a week.

Went to the produce stand/garden nursery today for some fresh vegetables and seedlings, and things looked perfectly normal. Went to the hardware store, not a facemask in sight, 20 people in the store, hanging around, smoking-and-joking. I think people have had about enough and are making decisions to take responsibility for their own actions, at least that what it looks like.

Bigger campfire works for me.

Sorry gang, but on the advice of someone that knows more about this than any of us, I will have to postpone. I'll do my own little tsmr later when the numbers come down a bit.

Looks like I'll have to do the same Rich. Not so worried about getting sick, but my "employer" has cut us back to 32 hours a week and is not allowing anyone to use vacation or personal time. Too bad really, this company used to care as much about customers and employees as it did profit.

I just got off the phone with the inn keeper and the state of Nc. has them in lock down well after the ride date. she did say that she is going to put everybody on for next year that has a room this year.

so it is on to plane B. I will run it from the campground with a few changes to the route. with blowing rock shut down we will not be going there and I will more than likely have a shorter and different route but still cover 3 states. some will thank me as we will not have the parkway to drone back on. also i don't think we can have a lunch stop but i think we will have a gas stop. with us not in blowing rock there will also not be a catered B-BQ but i think we can come up with something.

I do need a head count and who will want a cabin and will you be OK with sharing it.

I'll have a cabin if you got one... Question won't be "will I be able to share with someone"; sure I will, but "will they want to share with me....."!

Much as I would like to be there, it's going to be mid summer before I can go. Been talking with my brother about getting his friends motorhome and trailering down to Shady Valley. Anyone that wants to join us I'll keep you posted.

I also plan to trailer, arriving Thursday. The Bonneville is much more pleasant to ride in the mountains and my van is much more pleasant to sleep in.

Can't believe that they closed sections of the Parkway. What was the point of that? It's for DRIVING on, for heavens sake. I'll use part of it to get there this week....

Hope you guys have a great event. I was planning to come this year after several absences for no particular reason. However with some health situations in my household, I have been rigorously practicing social distances and limiting exposure to people and any public places and doing only what is necessary. I know most others don't consider the virus to be a serious threat in our region of the country but I am not willing to take chances when the sacrifices I am making are relatively minor.

I have been out a few times on the B50 and sail out on the sound often so I am not going stir crazy. I am down to a single bike now, the B50. I am making an attempt at simplifying life and getting rid of some clutter. I hope you guys have a great ride and be safe and for you beer drinkers, lift one for me. I am gonna make an attempt at next year.

Hy Mr Mike good to see you are still out and about. it has been a while but I can understand why you are not showing up this year. it will be a lot different ride this year with all that is going on but think all will still have a good time.

PS I will make sure at least 1 is hoisted for you

+1

Good to see those of you that can are carrying on the tradition. I consider myself a relative newcomer to this gathering, but it's become my favorite bike event of the year.

On the plus side, I can take my time on my swingarm rebuild (kit should be arriving today or tomorrow. I have a solo-type ride set up for myself in WV this weekend on the modern Tige-AH. Lots of gravel roads to get lost on....

Mike G - if you're serious about doing something around BR in July, keep me in the loop! Y'all have fun and be safe. Bill, I'll share a virtual cigar with you from WV this weekend.

So we were going about 50 mph when tom turkey ran across the road right to left in front of Tom's Norton. We were 4th and 5th I think. Tom and I both jumped on the binders but tom cleared the road, and Tom went by. When Tom went by, tom took to wing and went behind Tom. I still slowed until tom decided what to do. Tom made a 90 degree right turn and landed into the woods. That's when I decided tom was clear and I started to roll on the throttle. Suddenly Bambi appeared in front of me. I saw her a fraction of a second before I hit her. Down hard in the road, only remember pulling in arms and rolling a couple of times on the road before tumbling over the left bank. Never tried to break my fall. Thank all for the help, especially Tom for the gas station field dressing, and for those who made the Deerslayer roadable.

Your encounters are not the sort of thing I like to hear about as we have had very near misses with both beast & bird during trips in your country.

Just glad Dick that you seem to be reasonably OK.

Of twisties...

My powerful Gestapo speedometer (see " 'Allo 'Allo" for humorous reference) read 191 miles for the day.

I thought the route compared VERY favorably with the traditional one, and if we're voting (and we're not) I'd vote to run it again as "the new normal" until it's time to run the old one again ....

Almost 1000 miles on the old Norton this weekend and it never missed a beat .... other than having my left boot anointed with the finest Bel-Ray fork oil, and the wandering idle, it's running like a champ.

Dick, Glad you're no worse for the wear. The whole incident could have been a lot worse. I saw the turkey come up from the left but the collision with bambi and the skid was all behind me and I didn't see a thing. Also thankful someone took the initiative to ask the store owner for the medical supplies. Glad I could help with my old army medic and EMT training.

My first year for this ride. I bought the BMW three years ago with plans to ride to this event. Something always came up. This year, with petrol prices low, I decided to trailer the Bonneville behind the van.
I arrived on Thursday afternoon. It only threatened to rain, resulting in a double rainbow above the mountains.
I took a nice ride on Friday, following Gumby and Mike Baker. I feel like a valuable commodity these days, wiping up the rear on rides. laughing
Windy said the ride started at 09:30 or 10:00 on Saturday. We had the pre-ride meeting at 09:20, but by the time I got my gear on and started the bike they had left. I took off, hoping to catch up, but I only partially understood the plan. I ended up riding 133 up to Damascus and turning South on highway 91 toward Mountain City. I figured I could ride down to Boone and circle back without getting lost.
Beautiful day, beautiful roads, happy day. Then BINK!, I heard a chirp from the back wheel and the bike started weaving. I thought maybe I had a flat tire. Got the bike safely off the road and found that the rear axle nut was missing, along with the chain adjuster. I walked back the way I had come, but the only part I found was the spacing washer, no sign of the other pieces. I texted the others and, learning of the deer incident, settled in for a long wait.
One of the locals saw me sitting in the shade and asked if I were just taking a break. He returned about 20 minutes later with a lunch which his wife had packed for me. He also tapped the axle back in place while I held the wheel in line. He even tried to find a nut for me. No luck, closest we got was a coarse thread.
After another hour I figured I'd take a chance and limped back to Damascus to wait at Cowboy's market. A whole lot more comfortable sitting in the shade at a picnic table guzzling cool water. Two hours later Bill and Mike came with a trailer to my rescue.
Even so, it was a most excellent weekend. I got to meet new people and new roads. Many thanks to Windy for Hosting this event. laugh
Maybe next year I'll actually ride the snake. Gotta be a lot more fun with a bike under me instead of on the trailer behind the van.

well it looks like it was a success despite all the inconveniences that had to be overcome. the route was figured out a week and a half before the ride with a test run a few days later. the BBQ was a no brainier, after all the Q is also a tradition. some things that was missing was the picking, fog on the parkway, rain on the parkway during the LONG drone back. on a good note we had a campfire every night, great time with the story swapping and seeing some of the gang. I just want to thank everyone that took the time to come out during these times we are in.

PS it looks like all made back home safe and sound.

I thank you for putting a great weekend together!
And I know what it takes to do it, and I value it.

Did not miss the fog!

I think we counted 8 rain drops on the lean-to roof Saturday evening.
I think I also counted 8 rain drops on my trip home.

Epic weekend, no doubt!

Nice solo ride down to the rally on the Norton, about 6 hours through a really pretty part of the country.

Goal this year was not Blowing Rock, it being all closed, but Shady Valley ...

[Linked Image from photos.smugmug.com]

Got there Thursday and found folks had set up camp, but out riding at the moment ...

[Linked Image from photos.smugmug.com]

A spectacular rainbow after a shower (looks worse than it actually was), everyone had to take a picture ...

[Linked Image from photos.smugmug.com]

A little breakfast place in Shady Valley would bring your food outside to you. Bob is probably eyeballing a passing sport bike wondering if he's being challenged to a race ....

[Linked Image from photos.smugmug.com]

"I'll bet I could catch him on Lannis' MkIII ..." while No Name Man is at the table praying that his breakfast hurries up ... Bob and Chris rode 2200 miles in 3 days to get there and back from New Hampshire ..

[Linked Image from photos.smugmug.com]

DavidP is the very image of a man on a relaxed vacation, while the mighty Norton awaits the next ride ...

[Linked Image from photos.smugmug.com]

And our own Semper Gumby performs the necessary rituals so that his Firebird will continue to sound good, run good, look good, and handle good even with snow tires on ....

[Linked Image from photos.smugmug.com]

A good weekend, good company, good riding, good food, good weather, and a great ride home with son Alec on Sunday.

That's true, but those folks seem much happier in a job that THEY chose, suitable to their time of life today, and not just the job they've been in for 30 years because they sort of "had" to ... especially after they've taken a break, found out what it's like not to have to head in to the same old grind, and decided they'd rather do something for a bit of extra "bike" money.

I thought about it myself, putting my name in with a contract outfit for part time consulting work .... then said "Naaah, this is too much fun!"

At least at that point, you've given yourself the option!

After all this time I still gota catch grief over the Parkway😂. I’m considering Hosting a get together later this year. Kinda miss the mother hen thing. I’m thinking TWO as a base. We have a “core” group that keeps in touch. I’m sure some of you haven’t been there and I know you’ll like it. I’d dust off my ole Mid-Ohio set up just for old times sake.

Take care and stay healthy.........he who can’t make the leap to retire..... your ole friend in NC, USA. Gordon Gray

I joined the ride last year for the first time - Gold 72 Bonneville and had a great time. Everyone was very welcoming and it was great to get on my '72 again as I haven't been riding too much lately with my relocation to NC. I'm sorry I missed this years ride as it looks like for the most part you had great weather, road and company (aside from the Turkey/ Bambi incident). A busy life got in the way this year but I'm looking forward to joining next season.

Don't take the "parkway" thing too seriously. That original route you laid out from Blowing Rock, around, and back is still a great one. Only four left-hand turns in 210 miles, minimal traffic lights, and lots of beautiful curvy roads. It's a keeper even after 20 years ... !

I hear ya Lannis......that's why I added the smiley face. Been a bit nostalgic lately and would like to recreate some of the good times we've shared. I'm not sure if you've been to Two Wheels Only Suches but it is a wonderful campground and that part of Georgia is amazing. Our core group has talked about doing another camp out there later this year and I'm thinking I'll drag out the Mid-Ohio set up ( we've never had that at TWOS) and we can throw a real BritBike.com get together like the ole days?????? Right now it's all up in the air but I'm due. Been hiding under the rock for way too long.

You guys can't get rid of me that easy. TWOS is going to be a bit of a haul for our Northern Friends......but it's still about the same drive the Carter Brothers would do to make Mid-Ohio........and few can claim long distance like Richrd. ( I don't think he's been to TWOS either)

Just day dreaming of ole times with great friends.........I haven't missed one day of work since the lock down....got plenty of vacation time. I think it'd be a treat to turn into the campground and see the bb.com banner flying again.

I love our roads around here but those roads up there are a LOT of fun........even for us slow riders.

Steve, I need to ask our core group for input (late summer?) and I'm working with our good friends up north to come up with a date. When we have that nailed down I'll start a new thread something along the lines of " BritBike.com Reunion Camp".

I'm not good at mailing lists but you know me.......I can tear up a message board. I'll try to get it started ASAP ( come in GACracker)

TWO WHEELS ONLY SUCHES........late summer. EVERYONE IS WELCOME.........especially those of you who haven't had a chance to join in before (RAF....that means you bud)

I don't need to tell some of you but this is exactly how some of these long term friendships got started.

I PROMISE to be on my best behavior and will TRY to NOT repeat the SAME OLD campfire stories I've bored you with for years. (Bless you all for putting up with them)

Details to follow.

Hope to see ya this summer.........your friend in NC, USA Gordon Gray

TWO is a worthy spot! Been there a few times, riding or observing the True Grits 50cc ride.
I'll be there if I can!

Oh, and re the BRP, not a fan of the fog, but who can control that?

I'll be starting a short BRP tour next week, starting Wallhalla SC, passing through Cherokee to the first night in Little Switzerland, then on to Floyd VA.
After that I'll be heading home, but some of the group will be going all the way to the other end, then back. Did a short tour last year as well.

No issues with the BRP!

Good point Windy.......but I understand it's maybe not the best time to visit a Doctor's office. That said......they probably wouldn't have had to take my heart out and lay it on a table to work on it if I would have been more inclined to visit a doctor.

Hey Dick........your bike damage description sounds like you're describing any of my bikes. Heal quickly.....take care

PS.....Windy (long story) but I've given up talking on the phone........text or email my friend. Now that I've learned to text that's about all I do. Don't take offense.....my boss gets pissed at me all the time about it.

Sounds like a good time was had by all...Dick, glad to hear it's only bumps and brusies. As for the bike, much easier to repair rubber, metal and plastic than flesh and bones!

Gordon: the only way I can my 21 year-old to respond in a timely fashion is by text. If I call, it goes to VM where it dies a slow death....you should try FaceTime (or the Android equivalent). I find it much more conducive and connecting to have an extended conversation when I can see the person's face, especially in these COVID times.

Cheers,

Steve

Steve......I thought text was a stupid way to communicate......until I actually learned how and started using it. We have a "core" group that stays in touch with it. I like the fact that 5-6 of us can carry on a conversation at our own leisure...you have time to think about what you want to say....or say nothing just listen in. Works for me at work too......because I have a record of the conversation. No more he said she said. I find it to be a very useful tool and prefer it to talking on the phone. Face time?????? damn brother you musta forgot what I look like..... laughing mine isn't a face you want to see on any screen.

Take care and hope to see you this summer.....stay safe and healthy........Gordon

Deer fell down that slope just as the turkey made its departure. You hadnt hardly started to get back to the center of that single lane. We were all watching that turkey... You were only slightly more surprised than me!

I was just feet behind you on the GoldWing. We both knocked a lot of speed off as you dealt with the turkey.

That fender is rather well built, straightening it may be difficult!

Hope you're feeling better!

I am a flip phone guy. Texting is ok for a telephone number or a "yes" or "no" response, but mostly texting is for someone that does not want to talk to you. We got our first cell phone when they were called "bag: phones. Had to put an antenna on the roof of your car, but a great technology improvement….like the comic strips Dick Tracy wrist radio.

I am on my fourth flip phone, The three previous had unfortunate encounters with salt water.

I fought the move to a smart phone for a long time. Made the mistake of taking a call on one in front of my project manager. He was floored. I had a smart phone the next day. Hated it. Too big. Too complicated. Well as time went by and I learned a little about how to use it. I don’t want to be without it. Text with photos and with 5-6 others at the same time. Because you don’t want to talk to someone Mr Mike?? Naw it’s just a tool and a really good one. I’m typing this on one right now and I’m texting back and forth with a group and a couple of other friends. And I don’t have to say........ hey can I call you right back, I got another call coming in.

Gordon

Gordon, My life is too short to be wasting it on long typewritten responses on a smart phone, facebook and all that junk. I've got too much left to do in this life. I can talk a lot faster than I can type. I have a old tablet in my shop for checking weather, buying parts, email, taking on the road and those useful things. I have a desk top in the house that does the same. You could make the case that I could do it all with a smart phone but it would have to be as big as a tablet for me to read it. I am just content with a cheap little flip phone that easily slips in my front pocket. When it rings I answer it. I know I am behind the times, but I see so many people wasting away their lives on these smartphones. I see kids that don't even go out and play anymore because they ARE"ON" THEIR SMART PHONE all day long. Hard to have a conversation with my grand kids because the smart phone is always beeping or buzzing and they hafta see what it is...... ...but they rarely talk on it .

Just my way of seeing things.....old fashioned...yep.... Your post is probably the hundredth time someone has tried to convince me I need a smart phone.

Mr Mike

Mr Mike my friend. I’m not trying to convince anyone to get a smart phone. Just trying to explain why I like and use mine. For work I have a laptop and one of those tablet type things (I have never used) but I don’t use them anymore since I got this phone. Oh and the camera on these things!!!!

We’re good. You and Richrd flip away. I understand completely. Kids???? Yea they don’t play in the woods like I used to. But this is their time and I’m just an observer. Seems like every generation goes through something like that.

Take care and I hope our paths cross again soon.

Not only am I a dedicated flip phone user, I keep it turned off till I need it to make a call or if I know someone is going to call me. Less distractions in life that way.

I keep mine on, mostly so my missus can get me. I stay in the shop or on the water a lot so it is a nice safety device. I only get a few calls each day and it is very handy to not have to leave messages at the house. I don't do facebook or any of those other things so a flip phone is all I need. The best use of a cell phone is when I go shopping and they don't have what is on the list. I call home from the store and get it right rather than get home with the wrong thing and get that look from her. Anyone who has been married knows about those looks.

Mikey, the idea here is not to need to send you a PM to turn your phone on before we call. It will tell you when SHE s calling so you can pretend not to hear it.

Mr Mike, that was aimed at mikeg. He keeps his phone turned off so the wife can't find him.

Oops, now Mr. Mike is "busted". Hope Lela doesn't see that! For a price, we can make sure she doesn't ... !!

I resisted having a smart phone for a long time, mostly because of the added cost of a data plan.
Now I text more than I call, mostly because I don't wish to talk to voicemail if you're not available. Still annoys me when people keep sending fresh texts before I have time to answer the first one. If you wish to interrupt me, please call and talk. Also, it's not a race, please proof read your text before hitting send and then having to correct what you just sent because it makes no sense. Thumbs are for space bars, NOT for typing.
I do tend to leave my phone on at all times, but I use Do Not Disturb at night so y'all don't wake me up at the crack of dawn with whatever dribble you have to say. I also use Do Not Disturb While Driving. Genius! It should be required on all phones. Texting while driving should have the same penalty as drunk driving, loss of license.

BINGO!!

That, and I spend a great part of the day a slave to the phone. Most times at home I won't pick up till the answering machine gets it.

how bout this? I'll send mikeg's hoome number out to all you guys and we pick a nite and everyone takes turns calling him and hang up when the machine comes on. or we can all leave a message that his new bike is in and waiting to be picked up.

Lunch in Blowing Rock and a run around a bit of the BRP.
Up this way by car for a couple days to take a break from the FL heat.
Now I get it. What great Brit bike terrain.

Thanks Bill.
We are headed back southbound but I'm sure hoping to get one of the bikes up here in near future.
Will coordinate.
