Gonna take the head off my Trident to decoke and fix oil leaks. I spent time last night reading the posts I could find, here and TOL. I found no definitive opinions on this subject.
I have a complete gasket set from Big D which includes the original fire-ring gasket. I also have a used copper head gasket. Assuming that the liners still sit proud of the gasket surface, which head gasket would be better?
From my experience with my last Trident, the push rod tubes didn't leak until I used a copper head gasket. However, I knew nothing about checking squish at the time.
I use Indian Head gasket cement and I always retorque after the first short ride.

Yes, good question about liners sitting proud of cylinder deck.
Mine sit partially proud, partially even and partially sunken in a cyl block.
Next time I take my cyl head off I am going to machine cylinder block to get an even surface and will use Cometic gasket
I'm using now because it holds the top end better than composite or copper. Without machining I still can feel some blowby
on the left ( primary ) side of the head.
I didn't glue my pushrod seals and oil is leaking like crazy from all of them, however I tried to get a proper crush for every
pushrod independently.
After few good trashings they started leaking, so the next top end service will consist of cylinder block machining, new Cometic
cylinder and head gaskets and covseal gaskets for rocker boxes which by the way are doweled in cyl head.

Well, I ended up using the fire-ring gasket in the Big D set. Everything good so far. I just finished the second head torque and valve setting. No significant oil leaks.

I did red-line it a couple of times to make sure the jets match the pipes. But, I'm older and smarter than when I used my Trident in anger. Big smile on my face now.
