I've got an A65 OIL project coming along at present.
The bike is a basket case (bits from several bikes actually)
The original crank and the DS rod were trashed beyond repair, but I've now got a used crank that has two grinds left, and a nice looking pair of used rods.
But I know absolutely nothing of the history of these components except what their visual appearance tells me.
I've heard of people getting cranks X-rayed or magnafluxed to check for hidden cracks or defects, but I'm not really sure how far to go.
I'm not planning on going racing on this bike, but on the other hand I do believe in using them for what they were made for.

I got my 150,000 mile crank (Norton Commando) checked 3 years ago using the magnaflux type method. Cost was flat rate of £50. No problems with mine but they showed me a ground stanchion which looked perfect until tested. The crack showed up no mistake.

So if you have any doubts I think it's money well spent. Never had any aluminium components x-rayed though. Have A65's got a habit of breaking rods?

Problem with A65 rods with alloy cap is the big end wears oval. Bolt the cap back on and carefully measure vertical and horizontal diameter.

I would not entertain used rods. A pair of new rods is cheaper than a leg out of bed

I buy new aluminium rods from thunder engineering for my bikes, cost about £360-380 for a matched pair and excellent quality! The weight is the same as the 1970 on type rods so it could match your crank balance too.

I also had my crank nitrited following an oil starvation issue, polished the bad journal and it for treatment. Replaced the rod on that side too. Thunder matched the rod from their date code so the weight was uneffected.

I did polish a set of rods which were going into a friends engine, as they didn’t want to fit new units.

Thanks for all the good advice.
It looks like I'll have to add a new pair of rods to my Christmas list.
I've found some steel capped ones made by L F Harris Ltd.
Looking at them they are T140 rods with narrower big ends.
Not sure about the effect on the balance factor
though.

I used T140 rods in one build, SRM bored them to suit the A65 big end size.
