but I'm back. I was kinda active here a few years ago. For any who might recall, I had experienced an alternator explosion due to incorrect centering of the stator on my 1972 TR6 in 2008. Since it had damaged the crank stub, and it had never been rebuilt, we (my son and I) had rebuilt the motor. You may also recall that after the rebuild it seized....and after we replaced the new pistons AGAIN...it seized AGAIN.

Well it really discouraged me. I had successfully rebuilt a 1966 TR6 that we built into a bobber, a 1966 A65 bobber and 1968 T120 bobber (that we sold unfinished)but I could not make my first britbike run. I didn't want to even look at it for quite a while.

Last year I fell at work and broke my right kneecap, at which point I assumed my kick starting days were over. I had given the 72 to my son PJ several years ago but I remembered how much fun we had at the BIBR rally and the TSMR so I began looking for a Hinckley. I had fallen in lust with the Scrambler when it was first released so I found one a couple of months ago in Raleigh and PJ and I drove over with the trailer and brought it home. It's a 2012 and it had 399 miles. Got a pretty good deal and it had just a little Brit character. I figured it would be presentable at a Brit event if not really a classic....

Well this revived my interest in the 72 and long story short, it turned out that I overlooked ONE ring end gap which was the source of the seizures and we also had some timing trouble due to the older (unmarked) rotor I had put in. We got it running today.

So the moral of the story I guess is measure everything TWICE and PAY ATTENTION!

This may mean you will be seeing the Allan boys at some events again.....

Bernie.

Welcome back and glad the engine is sorted.

It's funny cause just a couple days ago there was a discussion on "Measure twice" on Tool Talk.

I once worked in a glass shop and my boss' favorite saying was "Measure twice, cut once".

Welcome back Bernie. Your old A65 Bobber is still one of the nicest bikes I have seen. Glad you kept it as your avatar.
