Hi There,

Can anyone please help in setting up the iginition on a distributor (type 18D2) fitted to my 1960 5TA.

Should be 36 degrees BTDC full advance.

Do you have the number thats stamped into the dizzy body?

points gap is 15 thou, AAU range is 14 degrees. Pull the whole thing apart, give it a really good clean out and check for any play or bend in the shaft. you WILL need a strobe light to check timing "concurrence".

I posted a bit of stuff a while ago on 18D2, 3TA and checking timing on both cylinders for bikes fitted with a dizzy. Hopefully your 5TA has an inspection cover in the chaincase.

Hi Andrewinpopayan,

Many thanks for the response. The outside number on the dizzy as you call it is 18D2 406488 and beneath RO <-- 5.60
presume the distributor is inserted in the hole and pressed home whilst the engine is 14 degrees BTDC. Then the distributor is rotated until the points open. These are set at 15 thou. Is this the correct procedure
