May be this has something to do with it :

What the USA is missing in its history , is a few of its major cities bombed flat .
Not futilities like Pearl Harbor , 9-11 , or even the civil war .
Several 100000, even millions of civilian casualties .
It might give them a more realistic view of world politics ..

Well, it all depends on how you see it.....There are guys in this post that feel a more socialist approach with more gov't is the way to go....And there are those, I believe in the minority, that feel less gov't is better....And some who believe business is evil .....And I believe along these lines is the answer....Do you or should you trust people in positions of power that more often than not have no real life experience about the decisions they make ?

Looking at what's worked or what hasn't worked in the vast history of the world seems to indicate all systems of government are fallible; each eventually becomes subject to the human inability to reside amidst power & money without becoming corrupted by it all. This is the fail point of all systems of government, historically. We clearly have reached this point of near-total systemic failure- as foreseen by our Founding Fathers.

I'm not advocating "socialism", per se.... what the heck does that even mean right now, in a time when we pay federal government employees, our "representatives" to enjoy full benefits and a lifetime salary as their reward for cow-towing to their contributors? What I would advocate for is a system of government which serves it's citizenry. Call it what you will, but with a crumbling infrastructure and looming oligarchy, I'm not seeing that our government is doing very well at serving you & I. I see Democracy as failing rapidly, completely in the Untied States. I honestly think it has about run its course, as all systems of government do. I am NOT advocating for an oligarchy, where corporations and a tiny percentage of people rule all.

I am definitely advocating for the poor of this country and of the world in general, and I don't view people who have way less than me as scammers because they are taking advantage of that which the system offers. There are most certainly folks who ARE scamming the system, but the majority probably are simply using the system that is in place for them. There are some basic human rights guaranteed by the 14th (I believe it is) amendment of the U.S. Constitution, not sure where this comes in regarding the so-called social safety net programs, but at the very least, most would agree that we are a Christian nation. And isn't it part of the Christian mandate to care for the poor, for those in need?

In terms of trusting people of power, I vote for those who I feel best represent me, The Worker, in national elections... Do I TRUST them? o hailf*ckingno. In local and state wide elections, I choose again, whatever candidate I feel will best represent my own interests. Voting ain't much these days, but hey- it's pretty much all we have.

To bad,
How did this thread go from
"Here's to working man "
To
" your lucky to have a job, Remember to thank your boss "
To
" the John Birch Society is right , get the US out of the UN "

For my part, i cant help but think the drift was intentional...

Well, it's about British Motorcycles, except the Rod and Tappet part. In the R&T, it's about anything at all .... !

I agree! Here's something that would be fun. Let's pull up the various lists and compare the number of photo Rally Reports from rides and rallies that ludwig has contributed to the list versus .... oh ... just about anyone. I'll volunteer!

Could be part of a sinister plan, you just never know about these things ....

There are currently 100 or so "current" (actively posted in this week) threads on the site. Of those, I can glance at them and tell that there are about 75 that I have no interest in because:

1) I don't know anything about it and don't really need to
2) I don't much like the subject content
3) It's on a subject in which I have no interest

So I don't post on them. I certainly don't spend my time reading them. And the ultimate insanity would be for me to waste my time and pay-by-the-megabyte home bandwidth to compose, write and POST a complaint on that thread like "why is the subject matter on this list like it is?" or "I don't like this subject, why don't you all quit posting?"

Maybe someone could explain why anyone would do that? I can't see it.

Lannis

Shame that Creedence couldn't get along; they were a good band.

I'm all in for doing it locally( as per my hiring a couple of Hungarian immigrants to paint the landlady's house a couple of months ago.) I don't give money to charities because I don't have much, but there's still things I can do.

I would hope that a poor person (me) giving up every last cent of my savings to basically strangers that were actually doing worse than me, should embarrass the hell out of a wealthy person who only donates money to charities because his accountant says it's a good tax write off.

But, whatever. I don't spend any time worrying about those folks.

My year has started off with a bang, however. I've picked up two jobs just this morning before lunch. Maybe the Karma will catch up with me after all.

Cheers,
Bill

So you gave a person (s) your last cent....And you hired some Hungarians to paint the land lady's place...Did you pay the Hungarians out of your pocket? No, because you admit to being poor...A poor person never hire's anyone...... As a contractor I didn't simply hand someone my shirt, because then I would have no shirt..And would have to go home to get another one ....I hired several out of work down to their last dime people and paid them out of pocket for clean up work at the job site. sometimes it was a day's pay, sometimes a week..And I paid more than minimum wage in cash. I even gave them a few bucks to buy breakfast so they wouln't work hungry...The rest is up to them to try and make a change in their life....One guy seemed fairly good at electrical work so I got him interviewed at the union hall an he got in the apprenticeship...You know the story, don't just hand out money, hand out a chance at a future....

Yes, I did, I gutted my savings. But that's not the whole story, of course. This was done to fulfill an obligation to my landlady. I must either contribute my time to the effort or hire someone to do it for me.
I chose the latter, mainly because the residents in the house are obnoxious, simple minded, argumentative, ignorant political extremists. I gave implicit instructions to my crew not to interface with them.
While they did that, I worked to earn the money to pay them, or rather help to pay back myself for the loss of my savings. They were so fast and so good, I put them on piece work which probably cost me more money, but it certainly was better for them. The end result is what counts. My landlady was happy, the residents were happy, my crew was happy and, while I didn't really benefit that much from the deal, I was happy considering how much happiness seem to be spread around.

Really, try not to be so cynical.

When I say I'm poor, I certainly don't feel poor. Financially challenged at the moment, perhaps, but the government has labeled me poor, and that's what I'm referring to.

My crew went on to work for others and now have more work than they actually want. I made friends for life. I gave them the references they needed to take off on their own. Their work ethic is incomparable. They did things I didn't pay for, just because their standards were higher than mine.

They showed up at my door on Christmas day loaded with presents for me and my dog, most of which were hand made.

This is how the real world works.

Try it sometime.

Cheers,
Bill

Well Lannis , you got me there .
But then , not so surprising with a posting ratio of 30 to 1 over the same period .
Usually I limit myself to technical stuff on the Norton bulletin .

A few years back I posted a few trip reports , but no longer .
I hardly take photos anymore .
Most rallys are boring anyway :
a bunch of bikes , lined up on the grass .
Fat bellies , beer in one hand ,hamburger in the other , scrutinising other peoples bikes , like dogs sniffing up each others arse ..
Not really my thing .

The weather is still terrible outside , so I googled some of your trip reports :
Precious few roads , loads of junk food .

I have a somewhat different view of what I (eventually ) want to share on a motorcycle forum :

How did that old dude get the sweet chickadee?

(he's either rich, or drives a Triumph Bonneville)

Lannis , I was definitely NOT referring to your looks ( sorry if you think so ..) but to the widespread , and IMO disgusting habbit of posting pics. of the stuff that one is about to eat .
One might as well post a pic. of what it has morfed into 24 later ..

Anyway , weather is clearing up , I have trees to cut , wood to chop .. Case closed .

Edit :

"If you work for a man, in Heaven’s name work for him. If he pays wages that supply you your bread and butter, work for him, speak well of him, think well of him, and stand by him, and stand by the institution he represents. I think if I worked for a man, I would work for him. I would not work for him a part of his time, but all of his time. I would give an undivided service or none. If put to the pinch, an ounce of loyalty is worth a pound of cleverness. If you must vilify, condemn, and eternally disparage, why, resign your position, and when you are outside, damn to your heart’s content. But, I pray you, so long as you are a part of an institution, do not condemn it. Not that you will injure the institution – not that – but when you disparage the concern of which you are a part, you disparage yourself."
