I'm putting my a65 lightning engine back together and ran into a problem. With the baggie of parts to put the crankshaft pinion gear etc back on I found a small metal dowel pin that is magnetic. I can't find a reference to such a part anywhere. Any ideas what it is? Thanks.

Nothing to do with the pinion gear. How small? The oil pump has small (~1/16"?) dowel pins to align the parts.

Thanks.I think that is the answer. I only have the one and it fits snugly into the pump but is loose on the case side. The fork on the oil pump for the tach has one side missing so I think I have to buy a new one anyway.

I just looked at some pictures and saw that the dowel pins are inside the oil pump used to locate th two halves of the pump together. Is there also two dowel pins that mate the pump to the case?

There is no locating pins for the oil pump and cases that I remember.
I think a photo is needed.
If your not fitting a tachometer the busted tang won't matter.

I don't have those dowels inside my pump but the one i found is between the size of the ones in the pump and the ones that locate the gearbox to the case. Weird thing is that it is magnetic so I'm wondering if it was just somewhere laying around and "hitched a ride". Only one of the tach drive tangs is missing and I'm not sure if it was working before I took it apart (wasn't running when got it). It would seem to work with just one tang but not sure about strength?

I think its a stray from something else, the TS gasket face has one or two dowels depending on year, the oil pump halves have two small dowels internally, thats it for dowels on the TS. The pump is not doweled to the cases.
My tach worked with a broken drive tang, I did replace the worm/ tang when I found it . usually a broken drive tang is matched with a nasty chisel mark on the gasket face where the DPO forced the cases apart, thus breaking the drive tang.
