My tank was repainted (using paint from RS Bike Paint
reproduction factory paint mix) Sterling Moss and White.
The stock stripe on the tank was tape vice being
painted, correct? The tank was painted prior to knowing
it was tape.

Question. If it was tape was the tape under the clear
coat or was it over? Also is there a place that even has
the tape? Was the tape a Sterling Moss or another green?

Thanks again,

Van

Stock, the tank was painted, including the pin stripes. from the factory, "tape' for pin stripes was not used.

Also, what is the model of your '71?
Without this information, how do we know if it is even the proper color for the year and model?

Thanks. I had read in a few places that the pinstripe
Under the top color on the two tones was tape on
the 1971 A65 Thunderbolt.
Color choices for the two tones were Bronze with White
bottom, Sterling Moss with White bottom. When I
Bought the bike that it was the Sterling Moss with
White bottom (original) but paint was not quite up to
My standards for the bike although thought long and hard
About the repaint. Side covers were Sterling Moss also.
Also frame is black not dove grey. Bike built June 1971.

BSA tank badges were (are) white.

Best Regards,

Van

The stripe on the Sterling Moss tank was a black stripe.

LOL. Yes. My A65 parts book spells it “Sterling”. “Stirling”
would be correct I guess for the race driver?

Don't assume the UK colour scheme was exactly the same as the US scheme, they did differ depending on year so do your research before committing to your final scheme.

On my original tanks (Canada) the sterling green tanks had BLACK TAPE for the stripe and the bronze tanks had Flouresent ORANGE TAPE for the stripe. The stripes were not painted originally!! People usually paint the stripes the same colour as the tank when they restore but this is not correct. Actually if you read the fine print in the parts manual it refers to tape for the striping.

The pinstripe I also thought was tape. I read it somewher.
Maybe Cycle magazine when they reviewed the 1971
Lightning. But....others have said it was painted. I did
Not know the pinstripe was black until Dickdastardy
Showed his tank and said it was black. Confirmed
Now by you. Really hreat to know! Going to probably
Paint it vice tape but considering tape. Dunno yet.
Doing the engine first.

Thanks!

Best regards,

Van
