I'm not sure how to do this......but for now here goes. Mike Carter lost his long battle with cancer today. In typical Mike Carter style he didn't want any fuss over him so for the most part he kept it a secret. There are a few of you that didn't know the details but did know he was losing the battle. I had asked him if I could tell people so they would have a chance to say goodbye while he could still hear it....but he didn't want to bother people with his troubles.....typical Mike.

So here's your chance to say goodbye to one of the truly good ones.

There is talk of a celebration of Mike's life to be held at the Carter Brother's Garage some time later. Details will be posted and I hope to see some of you there.

He was special.......if you knew him, there wasn't any doubt of it. He will be missed.... but never forgotten.

November 3, 2017.........a very sad day.

Gordon Gray

Wow, that is very sad to hear. When I used to live in Florida, I was not that far from him and was supposed to meet up but never did make it happen....something I've always regretted. Then, I have thought that maybe on a visit to Florida if I have a chance. I have kept in touch and bought and traded parts with Mike. He will be missed. Rest in Peace Brother.

This is very sad news indeed,
Mike has always been member of BritBike Forum going back to BSA Bulltin board in the '90s.
We offer our sincere condolences to his family.

Mike was the most kindest and genuine friend and he contributed so much to this forum as a member and moderator.
Here is a photo taken when he and others brought me to USA and Mid-Ohio in 2003. Mike then took me to Florida to stay there with him and Bev for a few days.
Happy memories.
Rest in Peace Mike!

I guess there are a lot of people on here now who have no clue who Mike is or what he did to promote this site.......sad on many levels.

[Linked Image]

(That's Mike on the right holding the banner, in a white rain suit and red cap...always had that smile on his face)

There was a time when Mike would make sure that EVERYBODY got a welcome and a reply to their first post. He was influential in starting the TSMR and the Mid-Ohio get-together. Mike retired and opened the Carter Bros Garage with his brother Dave and it had become a local hang out and well know and respected shop for repairing and restoring vintage bikes. Mike's quest was to see our old British bikes on the road and not just static displays. He was proud to be a part of this site and the hobby.

Both the TSMR and Mid-Ohio was an attempt by a few of us to get as many BB.comers together face to face as we could. Mike was a big part of that effort. Always positive and always had that smile on his face.

I'm not sure how this is going to work out but he has asked that his ashes be placed on the TSMR's Goat Path. Mike was born and raised in Florida and I can't tell you what an honor it is that he even considered his last resting place to be something that was a part of this site.

RIP my brother.........we're going to miss you but you will NEVER be forgotten.

I didn't ask for permission from brother Dave to use this photo.....I hope he doesn't mind but this could be my favorite photo of the two rock stars.

For the most part everybody in this photo played a big part in getting BB.comers together face to face. Alan Burgess says it was a "magical" time and I agree........so much friendship....so many laughs and smiles and I think we were all amazed how well we got along.

[Linked Image]

There's a few faces missing from this photo.......but those people know who you are and know you were a part of it too.

5..............of these people are gone now. 5 really good people.

Photo taken in 2010 during our tour of Henry's Motorcycles......there's that smile!

Mike had Triumphs, Nortons and BSA's.......rode em all. He also had a modern Enfield and Triumph but other than that he never showed up on anything non-British and was proud of it.

I was at his place a couple of weeks back and was blown away by the assortment of motorcycles in the shop......all runners or were going to be runners. Mike told me one time the shop only had one rule...."assholes aren't allowed"

RIP my BSA broder

Just learned of Mike's death on Facebook yesterday. At first I thought it had to be some other Mike Carter...couldn't be the one I know. However, knowing the poster I knew it had to be. I must say I was shocked and more than a little depressed.

Mike Carter was one of the genuinely nicest people I've ever known. His shop was always open to anyone who wanted to hang out, often with hotdogs on a rotisserie grill and beer in the fridge. He always had a smile and was eager to share anything he had.

He will be very, very missed.

Sorry to hear this. We (Pennsylvanians, Canadians, Wisconsinites, Ohioans, etc.) tried to visit Mike and Dave in Altoona, Florida at least once a year. Last time we were there, they were working on Bud Ekins' Triumph Speed Twin, along with an assortment of other British iron. Mike and Dave always showed us their projects and that good old Southern hospitality. Our condolences to Dave and the Carter families. As others have already remarked, another of the very best has gone. Keep the Faith. Bob Kent, OVBSAOC #3

Copied with permission from one of Mike's good friends Rich Tracey

Got some dreaded news today about the passing of an old friend. While I had known his condition, was told the prognosis and had the opportunity to see him before he passed, the news nonetheless is still a shock. Mike Carter and I had the opportunity to work together for somewhere around 20 years. Through thick and thin, good, bad and ugly he was always able to smile, had boundless energy, and was always there with a witty / corny joke, always Mike.
When he made the decision to get out of construction and began messing with bikes it was as though he was re-born, he found a happiness in doing that work that words cannot adequately describe. It made it all the greater that he had the opportunity to do this with brother Dave ( David Carter ). I cannot count the number of times he told me he "finally" found something he loved doing, it wasn't "work" it was a passion and it brought him both great joy and great friends.
He is unfairly gone way to soon. I'm going to miss the quirky comments, the barbs we would trade and seeing his mug. Mike was one of those friends that you could go without seeing for an extended period but when you did catch up - nothing changed, once he was in your life, he was there to stay.
I've never been one who is good with words, especially at a time like this. His loss hits anyone who knew him, hard, and there simply are no words to ease that pain.
God Speed my friend, I'm going to miss you.

You can tell Rich knew Mike well........he nailed it perfectly. Sorry for our loss Rich but I'm glad he had you as a friend.

The celebration of Mike's life is scheduled for November 18th, 2017 starting around noon.

19626 McCall Road
Altoona, Flordia 32702

If you would and you plan on going and don't have a way of letting Dave know you're going to be there please let me know because they would like a head count since they are having the celebration catered.

I'm probably going to trailer down and stay North of Altoona (around Palatka) and ride to the shop on a BSA.

I think so far we have 4 or 5 of us (BB.comers) planning on being there. The family asked that we do a head count because they are having the celebration catered.

I'll update the list when someone commits.

Mr Bob.........we will let them know you are thinking about them. Sometimes it's the thought that counts and this is one of those times. Good luck on your surgery and I hope you recover quickly.

Very sad news indeed.

I met Mike through 'Bodger in 2008, when we raced at Daytona. Mike & Dave put us up in the (then) fairly new shop, and basically from the moment he shook my hand and introduced me to Dave, the shop was mine. I was anxious to work on my bike, but it took a full two hours of interesting and hilarious detailed history of the brothers' motorcycling and shop tour before they notified us of the evening schedule of festivities and left us to set up out sleeping arrangements and helped us put our bikes on the lifts.

My most eloquent description of his kindness, generosity, and hospitality is certainly less than adequate to do him justice.

Paul, that is such a good photo of Malcolm. Thanks for sharing it.

The first time I saw the shop it was just a block (CMU) shell. No roof or floor.......the shop has changed a LOT since your photos.

I've updated the list of BB.comers that are going on the 18th. PLEASE think about making it......you won't regret it. There's going to be a crowd of like minded people.....Florida in November can be a bit rough. Yep........you might have to swap out the flip flops for sneakers.

Maybe we can get Richrd to tell the story about how he first met Mike.......this used to be a big welcoming family.

Mike was a good friend I very much enjoyed his company at TMSR with brother David and Mid-Ohio

I am so sorry to hear about Mike's passing. He was one of the people I always looked forward to seeing at Mid Ohio. Condolences to his family, he will be missed.

Paul......my eyes aren't as good as they used to be but I "think" in the first photo ( not counting the fellow with his back to us Dave or Tom?) the first two fellows are Ron T and Rich B. Same thing with the second photo....Greg, Dave, Mike, Rich B and Ron T.......Bodger and Paul.

Looks like there will be close to 100 people attending on the 18th. Says a lot about the effect Mike had on people.

Looks like we'll have 10 or so.........not bad but nothing like the "old" days.

hee hee

Malcolm and i left a bit early to go to the AHRMA awards banquet, and while we were away, the lads stuck "tech fail" dot stickers all over his bike, and festooned it with non-approved regalia. He was almost crying laughing, as were we all.

Life sometimes provides a shock so unexpected that it hits with the force of the proverbial sludge-hammer. So it was with this news of Mike's passing. I first contacted Mike last August to see if he and Dave might be interested in a survivor BSA gas tank ( original paint, decal, badges, good chrome, etc.) that I 'd kept for at least 25 years. He was, and we struck a deal that had the tank on it's way to the Carter Bros. Garage. I'm sure it would have brought more on eBay, but my priority was that it went to someone who could really appreciate it. About a month later I contacted Mike again looking for a source for repair stubs for A65 shift quadrants, his reply was " don't screw around with that, I'm sure we've got a quadrant around here somewhere". About a week later it showed up at my place at a price that covered little more than the cost of shipping. This was happening just as IRMA was about to hit Florida.
Good guys those Carter Bros.

All my Best to Dave and the rest of the Carter Family at this difficult time.

And Mike, when you hit " the twisties " out there with Bonzo, Bodger, Tarvin, GS Ron, Pete R and all the others we've lost; just remember: " Ride Hard, Ride often and "Keep The Rubber Side Down !"

Godspeed Bud.....

Phil

Phil......I got to visit with Mike and say goodbye before he passed. I can't say how much of an honor that was. We traded old stories and laughed a lot......always Mike. One of the things he mentioned during our catching up.......was your tank and how proud he was to have it. After our visit I went back out to the shop and asked Dave about it and he got it down off it's place on the TOP shelf and there it was in all it's glory......beautiful and I'll tell ya.....it's found a good home.

Take care.......Gordon in NC

Dave already asked me for a head count........I didn't count Windy or Mr Tom because I figured they told Dave already.

But........I know at least one of us is still on vacation and "maybe" when he gets back he'll make the trip down.....so I went ahead and added him to our count.

Still time to commit.......you won't regret it. Please come join us in celebrating Mike
Carter's life.

I'm driving down to The Best Western on the river in Palatka, FL on Friday evening and will have a BSA on the trailer. (work's a pain right now and I have to make sure I get back). I'll get up Saturday morning and make the 50+ mile ride on down to the shop. I'm looking forward to riding through Florida's bear country but wish it was for a different reason. Anybody want to join me on the ride from Palatka to Altoona, leaving around 11am is more than welcome.

It's a celebration of life but I'll still be dressed in black............Gordon Gray in NC, USA

Richrd says he'll try to meet me in Palatka but won't have a bike with him???????????????

Richrd in a truck is acceptable as long as he's got his trailer along full of motorcycles......just the truck....not sure if I'll recognize him. I would bring him a bike but my trailer would need to be redone to a dual and I just don't have the time. Maybe somebody else can help him out????? That is if he....for some reason hasn't given up on motorcycles all together.

The world is changing......I'm not sure it's for the good.

Sadly it was just this morning that I became aware (thank you Richrd) that another of the good guy is no longer with us frown
At the 2010 TSMR was where we really got to spend time with the Carters, at Windys Campground, and at Blowing Rock.
We offer our most sincere condolences to the Carter familly for their loss

For those of you that are just finding out about Mike......I apologize for not doing a better job of letting everybody know. I always check the "Active Threads" when I come on so I know what's going on for the day......my mistake thinking everybody else does too.

IF.......you can make it to Altoona it's not to late for me to make a call to Dave and let him know....but please let me know ASAP.

Never met the man, but like so many here it's a small world and I consider a lot of you as friends and family even if I haven't personally met you.

My condolences to all that were close to him. Keep the good memories close.

I met Mike and his brother Dave back in 2008 when Windy and I swung by the Carter Bros Garage one day. Mike was helping Windy get my Commando into running shape. It was back in the days when I didn’t know any other Norton owners in Florida. Mike and his brother, Dave, made me feel so welcomed the first time I met them. Really genuine guys.

The next spring I was at the Leesburg (FL) Bikefest when my rocker feed oil line decided to split and I found myself going nowhere fast. Lo and behold, out of the crowd of people on the sidewalk comes Mike running towards me and said, “Bummer, Dude….let’s get you off the street and go have a beer”. Later that afternoon, Mike rolled my bike up onto the bed of his pickup and we headed out on the 45 min. drive to the Garage, dropped off the bike, and headed back to Leesburg. Great ride with Mike chatting and laughing the whole way to the Garage and back. The next couple of weeks I was back at the Garage, the new SS oil line I had sent Mike installed, the bike tuned up, several other tweaks…when it came time to go, Mike said to get my hand out of my pocket…he didn’t want a dime from me.

Mike was truly one of the Great Ones. In remembrance, here’s a photo of Mike and Dave Carter, Dave Ashenbrener, Norton Billy and myself at Daytona.

Hi Guys,

I had the honor of meeting Mike at Blowing Rock for two different TSMR events. He was one of the quiet guys, who didn't particularly draw attention to himself, but was always there to help. (Kinda like Gordon...) I wish I could participate in celebrating his life, but It is just too far for a winter run from Washington State to Florida.

Mike gave me an original "BSA Pitstop" pin, and I treasure it. When I attend the first of the seasonal parties--on the 18th--I will be wearing black, except for that pin, which will be a little splash of color on my shoulder.

Ride in peace, Mike. Ride in peace.

I think we should all wear our bsa pitstop pins saturday. I got mine when Mike gave it to Tarvin to give to me way back when. It's been sitting on my trophy shelf ever since.

I think I still have a few of those left. I only had 100 of them made up. There are a few out there that were prototypes and I'm thinking there were only one or two of each option. Pitstop pins were different than the bb.com pins I had made up......but there were only 100 of those too.

I want to THANK each and every one of you that have taken the time to post to this thread.

There is a small group of us meeting up in Palatka and riding down Saturday. We'll be on one of those great Florida roads......there might be 3 curves in 55 miles.....but it's through a very interesting part of the state.

Still time to join us.........BLESS all of you that have posted to this thread...it means a lot to me and I know it means a lot to the family.

PS, We'll be sure to take and share some photos......

Did not learn of any of this until the 18th or I would have made every effort to be there. Mike was indeed a genuinely good guy. BB.C and the TSMR won't ever be the same.

Photo of Mike in better times. A TSMR gas stop at the Mouth of Wilson, VA in 2007. Mike, center, in his uniform... the ubiquitous black motorcycle T-shirt.

Photo of Mike adding some kind of cheater juice to his A65, with the help of brother Dave, at the fuel stop Shady Grove fuel stop in 2008.

I wish I could have been there. I will always remember Mike as one of the kindest, funniest and most genuine people I've known. He was always so positive and enthusiastic, particularly when it came to britbikes. His attitude was infectous in the best way. We should all aspire to be a little more like Mike. Godspeed my friend.

The celebration of Mike's life was something I will never forget. Smiles, laughs and tears. I took a lot of photos and will share later.

It was strange walking around the shop and waiting for Mike to come around the corner any minute. Mike's Brother Dave looks so much like Mike from the back....there were a couple of times....well, you might understand.

There was a LARGE group of people......a real testament to how many lives Mike touched.

Hope everybody made it back home safe and sound.

Bless those of you that took the time to be there.......you know the family appreciated it. We were the first to get there and the last to leave.....I liked that.

Photos tomorrow.....I know Richrd took a lot too but he won't make it back until tomorrow. 1400 miles one way for him.

Gordon

Thanks, Gordon! Those of us who couldn't make it appreciate the window through which we can partake vicariously.

We are in your debt.

Thank you Barb.....I know if you'd been closer you'd have been there. There were 80-90 people but I'm not posting photos of the crowd because I didn't know many of them and there were family members there that I don't want to post their photos with out their permission. I'm pissed that I didn't get a better photo of Richrd but I know I took a couple of photos of him with his camera. There were some very nice people there and a lot of like minds. It was funny but I "kinda" heard the same story over and over....." I saw a dude on a BSA and chased him down....turns out he had a shop close by and worked on bikes...."

The shop has 6 or 7 lifts......you were welcome to bring your bike over and use a lift and tools....The brothers never charged enough and were always doing stuff for free. Stories like " Yea I barley knew them and they let me work on my bike there....they were going to be gone for the weekend so they gave me a key to the shop!"

I think Dave's plans are to keep the shop open......and that a good thing for a lot of folks.

Gordon who has one more task left to do.......and I'm probably going to take care of it this weekend.
