Should I screw the dipstick completely to check the gearbox level, or check it without screwing it in? There is about half an inch of threads on the dipstick which will make quite a difference. Yes, I know I should have measured the amount of oil before refilling, but I had some left in from a previous change and used that first and don't know how much I put in!

Gavin,

I should screw it in, or I should have measured it first ?

I usually screw it in all the way just to be sure - don't over fill it! You will get all kinds of leaks
