1972 OIF TR6C multi position switch in side panel - Does anyone know which terminals each of the wires goes to please? Its been taken off & not marked. It also has the turn on/off switch in the headlight.

Only difference on your bike is no Blue/Yellow wire to the single spade terminal.

Btw, if you want to improve the standard switch's water-proofing/-clearing:-

. Before you refit the switch, carefully drill a small hole in the terminals-end backing that'll be at the bottom when the switch is mounted on the bike. Then any water that does get in can drain straight out again.

. Replace the mounting "Nut" (threaded ring around the keyhole) with either T160/'79/'80 twin 97-4589 Nut and 60-4335 lock Cover, or '81-on twin 97-7120 Nut, 60-7335 lock Cover and 97-7123 key Cap; the '81-on bits work better bigt but are less-easily obtainable. frown

. Fit the electric-start Norton Commando 06-5723 terminals cover, it's a better fit than H2262, that Meriden originally spec'ed for the completely-different 2-position ignition switch in the headlamp 'ear'.

One colour per switch number, and a blob on each cable

Very handy when a stray cable drops off

Thanks for the info. I haven't been able to find a 72 wiring diagram, but it looks like mine should have the earlier simple on/off ignition switch? At least thats what is in the parts book. In which case I should just connect the brown/white & brown/green on the same terminal (as the TR6C has the headlight switch?) Incidentally - what would the blue/ yellow wire do, as standard Lucas code has that as a long range light cable colour??

Every Triumph workshop manual and owner's handbook has the wiring diagram - http://classicbike.biz/Triumph/Repair/1970s/72Triumph_650cc_Twins_Workshop_Manual.pdf, manual pages H21 or H22, .pdf pages 195 or 196.

Bad practice to rely on the parts book drawing alone to identify a part; because of the expense of changing the printing plate, Triumph didn't always do it. If you enter the 5-figure number plus "Lucas" into your preferred internet search engine, it should return links to the latest version of the 4-position switch (30552, as used on '79-on twins).

If you think you mean the pictured toggle switch, same mistake as the ignition switch; enter "Lucas 31272" into your preferred internet search engine and follow one or two of the links to see what it actually should look like ... smile

When you look at the '71/'72 wiring diagrams, you'll see there isn't a separate one for the TR6C, so they must use switches with at least the same functions as the TR6R and T120.

Lucas didn't always follow their standard/British Standard colour codes on bikes. On, say, the T160 or '79-on twins - that also used the 4-position ignition switch - a Blue wire runs from terminal 4 to the headlamp on/off switch, then a Blue/Yellow wire runs from that to the dipswitch. Otoh, Blue/Yellow from terminal 4 for the headlamp was supplied to Norton for the Commando. Terminal 4 is only energised when the switch is turned two clicks clockwise from 'all off'.

On '71/'72 Triumphs and BSA's,the headlamp on/off switch is supplied by one of the Brown/Green wires from terminal 3 (the Brown/Green to the front of the bike also supplies the pilot and speedo. (and tacho.?) bulbs); a Blue wire from the headlamp on/off switch runs to the handlebar dipswitch.

Btw, Brown/Green only is also energised when the ignition switch is turned one click anti-clockwise from 'all off', for 'parking lights'. If you use that function and want to preclude the possibility of the mischevious or nefarious turning on the headlamp and flattening the battery quicker, disconnect the Brown/Green from the headlamp switch and run a (Blue?) wire from the switch to ignition switch terminal 4. Then the headlamp on/off switch can only turn the headlamp on when the ignition's on too.

I just checked the ignition switch & mine only has three terminals: the single spade is no 3, with two doubles as 1 & 2. Positions 4 & 5 are marked but blanked off. It has the four positions of the key. I don't have a battery at present so can't directly test it, but I am going to assume that if powere (brown/blue) goes to the single terminal the others will be one way or the other (white to coils & brown/green to lights). I can control the headlight at least with the turn switch on the headlight shell.

Ahead of testing the switch, given all (Triumph, BSA and Norton) wiring diagrams show Brown/Blue attached to terminal 1 (and White attached to terminal 2, Brown/Green attached to terminal 3), why would you assume anything different? confused

Depends on the switch - ime, at least some have an internal connection between #2 (normally White wire(s)) and #3 (normally Brown/Green wire(s) when in the 'all off' position. So, if you connect Brown/Blue (power from the battery) to #2, the lights will be on when the key/switch is in the 'all off' position. confused

Mmmm ... I didn't mean I doubted they existed, just I've never seen one in real life. Lucas seem to have upgraded to the 4-terminal switch fairly quickly?
