Hi guys , simple one this ok........how the hell do you get the right hand front cylinder head nut off a B 50 ???????????
I cant get any of my spanners on the damn thing , the spanner catches the fins before slipping on , I could grind one down but itll have zero strength to torque up !

It's an odd size but still AF not whitworth plus you need a slimmed down ring spanner.

This will not help you with your head nut removal but we offer nuts that are 1/2" 12pt so you can use a 12 pt 1/2" wrench to assemble with on reassembly. We started using these back in the 90`s on race bikes and many street riders like them also.

You can also use flange base nuts with a reduced 12 point hex to make access easier.

It would have been so easy for BSA to have altered the head pattern slightly and put the right hand head nuts inside the rocker cover

11/16" AF ring spanner. If a decent make (ie: not over-thik steel to make up for poor quality), should ft no problem. I have two such spanners which fit my B50's head nut.

Or do you mean the front nut of the outer pair on the right-hand side? If you do mean these, you will need to grind down a flat 9/16"AF ring spanner 9again, good quality, or it will break due to the reduced thickness).

For torquing, you'll need to get nuts welded to your 11/16" and your 9/16" ring spanners at 3" or 4" away from centres of studs and do the calculation that the genuine NSA manual very helpfully spells out.


If anything other than a blank space is visible here, something's wrong.

Here in Australia, there was a cranked 11/16 AF spanner with a 1/2" square drive directly above the ring. This was used for tightening the cylinder head bolts directly above the rocker shaft on early Holden motors. This motor was based on a Chev engine, so there was probably a similar spanner in the UK used for Vauxhalls.
It needs to be ground back a little, but unit single head bolt torques are much lower than cast iron Holden motors.

Alternatively, Motion Pro makes an adapter which clamps a ring spanner and has a 3/8" square drive for the torque wrench.
