OE # 71-2667,+.020"
I have NOS Hepolites, STD, 71-2666 (1 pair) and + .040", 71-2668 (2 pair) pistons.
I could open it up to +.040", but would prefer +.020",if I could find a pair.
E & V offers +.040" and +.080" pistons.
British Only, and Klempf's, NG
Still waiting on Baxter's.
Possible source suggestions also appreciated.
Thanks KL

The bloke who trades as ebvc on eBay had some A70 pistons listed a while back. Unfortunately, I don't remember the size.

One nice thing about A70s is that most of the parts are common to A65s, so there are probably squillions of good +.040 late model barrels available.

Shane,
Yes, ebvc,Excellent.
I obtained my STD A70 pistons from him this year.
Perhaps that's what you're remembering?
A 90 minute drive, from my place.
The 40's I've had for many years, grabbed them immediately,
when they surfaced,pre-internet-Walneck's.
Thanks,KL

Curious: the bore is the same as the A-65, stroker crank & shorter rods. if the rods were not shorter did BSA move the piston pin higher to lower the piston? why do A-65 pistons not work. The Nov/Dec 2012 Motorcycle Classics magazine has feature story on an A-70L.The article said the A-70 had 9.5 to1 vs A-65 9 to1pistons. The bike was restored by Brian St.John of Legend Cycle in Idaho Falls Idaho

Pin higher to lower the piston? to make it fit? Kinda looks that way...
A few,hasty,measurements,
Measured on the short side, centerline of the grudgeon pin-
Bottom of oil ring land to bottom of piston skirt.
A65-1.890
A70-1.464
Overall height, appx.bottom of skirt/top of piston crown,-
A65-2.96
A70-2.64
With the grudgeon pins lined up-
The A70 top ring,lines up with,the 2nd A65 ring.
I believe the connecting rods A65/A70,are the same length.
The A70 rod has a steel,end cap.
Both,A65,and A70 rods have the number 71-1112,cast into the shank.
The A70 piston dome profile,is visually closer to the 750 Triumph-7.9:1 piston.
Shallow,compared to the A65.
I am actively pursuing all recommendations and will issue a full report!
Thanks again, KL

Yes, the A70 rods are the same as late A65, and the steel caps were used in some of the last A65s.

Apparently, T140 pistons can be used in A70s with minor modification, but I don't have the details.

I seem to recall, that the valve pockets/eyebrows,on the T140 pistons, are closer to the pistons center, more pronounced, with greater depth,
whereas the A70 pockets(?) ,are broad flats, leaving a knife edge,of piston, between the 'pocket'and the cylinder wall.

Standard t140 pistons are a65/a70 +40
With either a10 or norton cranks (or for that matter a70 ones) the pockets need cutting a little.
Just get an old inlet valve and make a 'milling' tool from it, use with a portable drill and it
will act like a fly cutter with the head back on. Then finish the pocket with a dremel or similar.

Nick

Ed V has a70 pistons for sale.

Pistons should pose no problems as long as you have an original to copy. There are several manufactures such as J&E, Venolia and Ross who can make them up for you. You'll need to figure which rings will work and send them along with the old pistons to make sure everything matches.
I had to do this several years ago when I was building a '29 Indian 45" 101 Scout.
These modern forged pistons should be superior in quality to the originals.
Good Luck
Sam

Thank you all,particularly Bodie-
Hepolite pistons are now on the way from Ray Fisher @50GBP/pair.At this price I bought 2 pair.Wow!
He still has +.020"(1 pair) and,+.040" A70 pistons, for any who might be interested.
Perhaps the discount price,is a result of,a lack of A70 customers.
More may be collecting dust somewhere...
I now have enough pistons for me, and, the next of kin, and/or owner.

And thanks too, NickL, for clarification on A70/T140 compatibility.

REgards, KL

Thanks for the update.
How did you get in touch with him? The shop hours seem fairly short.

I'm up at 3:30am for work,anyway.They are +5 hours,from my time zone, I called at 4am EDST.
I rang Monday-got the machine

Tuesday-Got Ray's (?) father,who took my inquiry.
"I'll get this to my son,he handles these things"

Wednesday-Made the purchase over the phone line, like the old days.

Unless three generations work in the shop, that was Ray himself, he's been in business a lo-oo-ng time. smile I've one of his catalogues from 1976, before I owned a Triumph and when Ray also sold cafe bits for Japanese bikes alongside the Britbike bits.

Thank you everybody.

I called to ask about the +.020 and +.040 pistons and spoke to a very nice chap (probably Ray) who said "Oh, most of those just went to America".
The rest are now on their way to Australia to do their part for my A70 ambitions.

No real problem ,
Just likely after years of vibration & wind buffeting one of the wires up around the coils had fractured inside it's plastic
covering just before a spade connector .. covering looked good but the wire inside was shot ,

Made things a bit hit & miss down in the good electrical connection department ..

I think there is a Mr. Elliot,on the forum that has an A70 bike project,as well.
That makes 3
