You know, 1970 doesn't seem that long ago. Thats when my simmering interest in motorcycles finally came to the boil with the acquisition of my first motorcycle l British, of course ! Now, reading all the American motorcycle magazines (which, really, started in the late '60's at school, when I should have been studying other stuff !), an interest in American type competition and tuning methods began to ferment.
Ultimately, I obtained the book "Grand National ", by Joe Scalzo.
Which covered the era when supermen roamed American racetracks ! On British machinery ! Dick Dorrestyn, Joe Leonard, Al Gunter, Neil Keen,Sammy Tanner to name a few.
And " Van Looney ", another larger than life character !
Its sad when epochs end, but the stories endure !

He did, mostly. He raced a Triumph a few times, I think in local SoCal races. I've got a picture somewhere of Joe on a rigid T100R with a flat tire but I'm no longer able to post from PB and haven't quite figured out how to get my pictures downsized enough to be able to post directly.
