Last year I bought this...

[Linked Image]

because it was too cheap to pass up and I'm a bit of a sucker for such deals. I spent some spare time and a few hundred dollars on it and finally took it for a spin today. I have ridden newer 1800cc Wings in the past, and for all their bulk, above about 5MPH it seems to disappear. I guess Honda has come a long way since this first generation TANK. perhaps some new tires might improve the road feel, but I doubt it will ever impress me with its slow speed or parking lot manners anytime soon. Look for it with a sidecar soon.

Strip all that tupperware and you will have what was a pretty fast bike for the time. When it first came out, it was the fastest production motorcycle.

that is first-generation. original comstar wheels.

check the bolts on the wheel spokes. they were known to go loose.

when i was cruising the dealerships for my first bike in the americas, i remember looking at these.

bought my T120 instead, though.

First GoldWings had spoked wheels.
Comstars would be 1979, IIRC.

My father had the 2nd '76 in town.

Spoked wheels on 'Wings were in 1975-1976-1977. Take off all that bodywork, and go naked:

did the early wings have an electronic ignition?

i remember the 1978 hawks had them, and as i recall, they were first.

It has an aftermarket electronic ignition. Good thing cause I really don't like the idea of dealing with 4 sets of points. The Comstars are original, and yes, the fairing must weigh 20 pounds. I think my biggest problem(complaint) is the footboards and foot controls. I don't like having to pick my feet up in order to use the shifter or brake, and having to get your leg to the outside of the boards at a full stop can be challenging when your short legged like me.

Footboards? Impossible for me!

Check out that Naked Gold Wing link I sent -- lots of good info on modifications. Nicest people, too.

Maybe someone there would like to trade items (footboards/foorpegs), or buy bodywork, or ... .

Also, if I owned that bike, I'd contact Bill Gifford, GW specialist in Whitinsville MA

I expect that he could help with whatever you want to do with it.

I wanted to buy a naked wing in 79 but it turned out insurance for a 18 year old was more than the bike payment

When given the choice between two evils I picked the one I haven't tried before

Thanks Kurt. I've checked out NGW in the past but it's been a while. Not sure what I really want to do with this thing but the initial thought was a sidehack tug. Time will tell

PS-we need to hook up for a ride sometime this summer. We live too close not to!

shoot, it's a motorcycle. put that sidecar on it and go cross-country.

i have an A65 i bought specifically to put a chair on, and i'm pricing them as we speak.

don't think. the 1000cc wings were an icon of the last century. just do it.

Remove trunk & R/S hardbag add chair. Don't need to put feet down when stopped, still get wet, modify foot brake pedal and shifter A/R
Check with Show Chrome they have been doing wing stuff for ever. Use for fun and as 3 wheel pickup!!!!!

An uncle had a stripped Wing in 75-76. Still looked huge. Enjoy the ride, Mike!
