I recently had a look at a rigid girder Norton supposedly 1931 model 19R ? , This is a OHV 600cc single , has instruments in tank top panel exhaust pipe exits to the left hand side (primary cover). I have the frame numbers and far as I can make out it is for a model 20 it has a frame number 51400 with the engine number 58201. I am not to familiar with pre war Nortons but I suspect it a bitsa. Anyone out have a idea of what models or parts this bike is made up from? I have a couple of photos which i,ll add later... Dave

I'm no expert, but a 20 is a 500 and isn't a 19.

So far as I know S meant sprung and R meant rigid, so I don't know why a 1931 Norton would be an R, seeing as there were no sprung frame Nortons at the time.

This Norton is a rigid not sprung frame . as far I have found out a model 20 is a 500cc twin port single. I think this is a rigid /girder model 20 but fitted with a later OHV model 19 600cc engine. I,ll post some photos later , bike looks like a original old bike, I think it had a engine swap very early in its life. The engine is supposed to be 1934 ?.. Dave

I'm with tritonthrasher on this - prewar Norton frame numbers don't have any reference to the model
included in them, and don't match the engine numbers, and were ALL rigid models,
so most of this post so far is all at sea. !

We look forward to some pics.
If the pipe goes down the left side, the engine can't be too much later....

The year you mentioned, 1931, is a Rigid only year so it would not have the R as all Nortons were R's as S's did not exist.

Is the sump not very close to the ground? Looks like the forks are too short , I am not a Norton expert.

I think the front fork spring is weak looking at the angle of the fork links, there is lots to sort out with bikes of this age after all it is over 80 years old...

One of the prewar models was a Model 19, NOT a 19R, so thats where that came from.... !

Interesting looking cycle. You seem to be acquiring them faster than restoring them ?
Strike while the iron is hot, eh ?

Also, its a Model G Special, not a Model GS Special.
Gotta get the name right #2 !!
