THE BEST CHILI - hot and served steamin' hot - and hot dogs, fried til they split. I used to live nearby in Little Falls and would go there for a treat.

Running from demons in WNY
Ha, Rutts Hut....I grew up in the area and in the late 60's we used to have "organized" street drag races on Rt 21 next to the Rutt's.......I haven't been back there since I moved away in 1973....A ripper is the Caddy of hot dogs.............

Did anyone attend? We'd like a report! And photos if not asking too much.

So--- particularly for HillBilly Bike and Al---but also for everyone else-- the story goes something like this-------
Rutt's Hut was founded in 1928 and is a traditional diner with its speciality being the Rutt's Ripper--- a deep fried hot dog.
It has been on the Food Network and is one of the US ytop 100 dishes you must eat.
It is bad for cholesterol and heart disease but one of those things that you must try at least once in your life!
Historically there was always a bikers meet there on Wednesday evenings.
In the "old days" I understand that things got pretty hairy with drag races on the road next to Rutt's and burn outs in the parking lot.
I moved to US from UK about 16 years ago and as I live about 5 miles from Rutt's I soon found my way there on most Wednesday evenings in the summer.
In my time the meet has been much quieter and more subdued and the attendance has dropped off.
Over the last few years the attendance has been about 85% Harley, a handful of Brit bikes and a smattering of European and Jap vintage bikes.
The highlight of the year has been the "Old Bike Night" with entries for bikes over 25 years old.
Last year it attracted about 25 entries and about 75 other bikes attended.
For the last 15 years or so the "Old Bike Night" has been organized by one guy on his own-- Ron Zuk.
Publicity was minimal and prizes were what Rutt's got from the brewery.
Last fall Ron retired from work ands moved house from NJ to PA (very common as NJ property taxes are the highest in US),
The annual "Old Bike Night" looked about to fizzle out.
However three friends and I (all Brit bikers and who had met at Rutts) decided to pick it up and continue it.
All four of us are retired.
We had about three meetings over the last winter in my local Italian restaurant --meeting at midday for lunch and being thrown out at 4 pm when they wanted to set up for dinner!
We approached local dealers for financial support.
All three came over very positively.
So--many public thanks to:
Bergen County Harley Davidson (American class sponsors)
Locomotion Powersports (British class sponsors)
Motorcycle Mall (European and Japanese class sponsors)

Later we also had support from British Cycle Supply who supported us by financing beer and Rippers for the judges and helpers. Many thanks Mark Appleton!

Armed with some money we had flyers printed and canvassed all the local small bike dealers and bike gear stores to publicise the event. Also on web sites. The flyer graphics were prepared by a relative of one of the four organizers.
Rutts got the brewery to print posters and banners and we got those into the biking public eye too.
The finance also allowed us to make trophies in the form of plaques. The artwork for the trophy plaques was prepared by a relative of another of the four organizers.
Came the day--- the weather was good--- mid 70s temperature, sunshine and low humidity--ideal for a bike show.

We ended up with 75+ entries and a total attendance estimated to be between 350 and 400 bikes.
The parking lots were full and cars having to park on adjoining rods.
There were four territorial classes--American, European, Japanese and British.
Also a People's Choice class and a class for Greatest Combined Age of Bike and Rider ( common in UK but I think unusual in US),
Also a Best in Show.
We managed to track down Ron Zuk in PA and invited him over for the show.
He judged the Best in Show and we presented him with a special plaque as a Founders Award.
So==we as the organizers were pretty pleased. The sponsors and Rutts have been debriefed and we are committed to doing the same next year and beyond--with a few lessons learned to be applied in the future.
There are some photos which I will post when I get back to my home computer on Tuesday.
Hope that this has not bored you!

Thanks T-man! Looking forward to seeing the photos. Very good work on organizing the event - excellent turnout. Let's see, If I haul the Interceptor to my cousin's in Fairfield I could ride in from there...

A few photos of the show to give you a feel for the atmosphere.
All these were taken at an early stage of the show before it got really crowded.
More to follow!

Best in show was this BMW R69S (photo)
Best British bike was a restored 1969 BSA Firebird Scrambler with the runner up a restored 1969 Triumph Bonneville.

Who said that old bikes can only use old technology?
Not content with electronic ignition systems, solid state regulator/rectifiers etc etc for the Rutts Ripper Old Bike Night we had one of the regulars flying a drone and taking photos!
Again this was at an early stage of the show--it got much more crowded later on!
Hope these photos give you a flavor of the show.
By popular demand we will be running it again next year and on an annual basis thereafter.
A MUST BE THERE date in your diary for next year!

Wow! How many bikes do you think? What time did it wind down? Would I get back to Fairfield before dark? (Yes, I can ride at night. No, I don't want to ride at night in metro New Jersey traffic. I lived there for over 15 years. I know what I'm up against!)
Thanks for the photos Tridentman.

Al--we had 75+ entries and estimate the total attendance to be 350-400 bikes.
The photos do not do the numbers justice.
They were all taken at an early stage of the show. A little later we were all too busy to take photos!
It started to wind down at about 8.30 as it started to get dark.
Although there were still guys there at 10.30 as we left after clearing up.

WOW! clap

Killer event and an awesome back story!
Thanks for putting up some photos, & sharing the story, Tridentman.

I've done some time organizing managing all volunteer events. There is so much that happens to make something like this go off safely; only those involved know the extent of time and energy invested by a few.

Pulling in some sponsorship was a great idea!
Y'all done good.

Huh...New Jersey. In between PA and Manhattan, right? If I used a calendar for scheduling my life I would put this on it. Would make a nice relaxing trip right before the family reunion.

Yup!---that is one way of putting it--between PA and Manhattan.
Rutts Hut is only about a mile from Route 3 which takes you straight into the Lincoln Tunnel and Manhattan.
It is about ten miles from the tunnel I guess.
So--Bill E --or No Name Man---see you there next year---no excuses accepted --you have almost a year to plan it!
