Since I started messing around with my carb, I thought I should recheck valve clearances and timing before I went any further.
Valve clearances and static timing were aok, but when I put the strobe on the rotor it did not advance with revs at all against the pointer.
The aau is loose on itself so I'm not sure what's up.
It idles well and otherwise seems ok, what do I know. It's has ET if that makes any difference.
Could it be that the springs are so loose that it's going full advanced at idle? How can I tell if the springs are ok?

The ET only gives 5 degrees of advance at the cam and 10 at the crank, coil ignition B44's have 12 at the cam and 24 at the crank, suspect you are right in thinking its going fully advanced at idle. I never check the springs but fit stronger ones but there is a lot of slack potential in a worn AAU and even strong springs may struggle to stop it advancing on an ET AAU.

I went through a few ignition iterations on my B44R to get it to run properly. I recommend you get rid of the points and AAU. Install an EI.

The springs seem a little stretched and loose so NOS Lucas "strong" springs have been ordered and will be on the way.
There's no slop at all between the AAU center and the post on the plate, so I hope the springs will do it.
